What does it mean to be better? @HyundaiUSA came to me with that question early this year and asked if Iʼd be willing to share a series of ideas and initiatives around how Iʼm #DrivenByBetter in my own life (Ummm YES!!) while testing out their award-winning Kona over the next few months. #ad

Each month I will explore a different aspect or initiative on how I/we can be better, physically, mentally, and for our communities. For me, inside ‘betterʼ lives innovation, creativity, and a conscious habit of always striving to do one’s best. So in honor of physical challenges here is one that makes me better - highlining. It is by far the hardest thing I have ever learned to do and has taught me how essential it is to fall in love with the process of
lifelong learning, failing and trying again. In my everyday life Iʼve been really enjoying pushing myself to strengthen my upper body with weights and pull ups. I am currently the reigning champion at my household over all the boys for who can hang on the pull up bar longest woot woot🥳

I challenge each of you to make a physical goal for the month of September or challenge me to one :p Use the hashtag #DrivenByBetter in your stories or posts and Iʼll be featuring some of my favorites! :) -

A Cherokee proverb tells us that inside every person there is fight going on between two wolves.

One is anger, envy, sorrow, regret, greed, arrogance, self-pity, guilt, resentment, inferiority, lies, false pride, superiority, and ego.

The other is good – he is joy, peace, love, hope, serenity, humility, kindness, benevolence, empathy, generosity, truth, compassion, and faith. “Which wolf will win?” The one you feed.
-
What does this have to do with whale sharks? In my travels I see many of the same struggles all over our natural world. For example this spot. Economically, East Kalimantan is almost entirely dependent on natural resources such as oilfield exploration, coal mining and gold mining. We saw mines and swaths carved out of the forests, big ships piled high with black coal, and plastic bottles clinking against each other as they pile up on the incoming tide.

Yet a short boat ride away exists an absolute marvel of nature - whale sharks, crystal clear lakes, a turtle sanctuary, sublime cave diving, a rare lake full of stingless jellyfish, the list goes on. It felt like seeing two futures side by side. Two wolves. Which wolf will we feed?

We were able to meet with the Minister of the province and express how much we hope they continue to shift their focus to protecting nature. I promised him I would tell people to visit, so here I am keeping that promise :) While ecotourism is Not going to save the world, it does create tangible value out of preserving an invaluable resource. Managed correctly everyone wins.

Our future is shaped by what wolves we feed - both inside of us and out.

Me, pondering if I will ever feel motivated to post on Instagram again. For me captions have always been the thing that give me the most pause. Like I don’t know what anyone else’s process looks like but mine is this slow crawl circle kind of thing haha. Sometimes it makes magic. Sometimes I stare at the wall.

Usually I share when I’m excited about something - a place or a moment that amazed me. Right now, conversely enough, I haven’t been sharing on here because there are SO MANY things I’m excited about on the horizon that I’ve been giving myself to loving the present moment, to the amazing community of humans next to me, and to not diverting my energy into touching my phone too much :)
-
Anyway Happy Friday humans!! I would love to know something you’re excited about right now if you’d like to share. Or don’t. (It always feels like click baity 🤷‍️ asking you all to comment but honestly I love having a peek into your joy.. no pressure ) I’m personally excited about all the new recipes I’ve been learning. Sounds kinda dorky but yea. I’ve always been pretty into dorky so I’m down🤓 photo by @cobiandewey #wonderfulindonesia #rajaampat #wonderfulrecipes?

For this shot I used @CanonUSA #EOSM50, and it was so nice to have the flip out Vari-Angle LCD to be able to get a low angle and still see the screen for framing. I find having it actually encourages me to get more creative with shot angles and help to nail focus more often (I put a few examples in my story as well). This campaign for their #EOSM50 has been one of my favorite cameras to shoot with ever (like I make my friends buy this camera too) and I hope it has shown some of you that you don’t need a crazy expensive camera to get beautiful images and have a ton of fun! Thanks for helping with this one @cobiandewey

Always be the best person you can be. Be kind even when you’re tired. Be understanding even when you’re angry.

Do more than you’re asked and don’t ask for anything in return. Don’t silently expect anything either. Listen when someone talks, and really listen too, stop just thinking of how you’ll reply. Tell people that you love them and that you appreciate them. Go out of your way to do things for people.

Be the greatest person you can possibly be and when you mess up, make up for it in the next moment or minute or day.

One thing you should never do? Never spend your time trying to prove to anybody that you’re great. Your actions will speak for themselves. We only have limited time on this earth...don’t waste it. If someone doesn’t see your light, don’t worry.
Like moths, good people are attracted to flames and to light, and they. will. come.

Run towards things that spark joy last night it started pelting rain and mid-sprint to the car I hesitated. “Stay!” I yelled to @kailocey.
“What?!” “STAY! Let’s dance!”
So we did. And the sun blazed from behind the clouds and it was still raining but we forgot why we would ever run from this.

Photos prove I wasn’t just dreaming. On a little atoll, far from all the things we didn’t want in the world and close to the things we did...We swam with little jellyfish in the morning, dove the spooky top section of a 24m cave swim through, and had a massive lunch before getting in the water again then playing board games at sunset.

The water clarity beside this little jetty on Arborek Island was some of the best I’ve ever experienced - well over 100 ft and teeming with life. Even though there were a hundred types of beauty in every direction (palm trees, cutest kids, beautiful fish) I love getting these top down shots. Something about the luminous hues of water and simplicity remind me of a painting :) Thanks for snapping this one @cobiandewey

As always I’m so stunned by the clarity and detail the @CanonUSA #EOSM50 produces in such a small and affordable set up. City, turned to country, turned to dirt road. We walked through some bushes and twiggy trees, crunch crunching dead leaves and harnesses jingling, to a tree covered hole in the ground.

We had been given a quick lesson in rappelling and ascending in a mix of Indonesian, English, and a lot of miming. Apparently we passed the test and what followed was hands down one of the most beautiful outdoor experiences of my life.

Here I am descending 300 feet through through technicolor beams of light. At one point I could see the rays all above me and a circular rainbow below me and all I could hear was the rushing of water below. If you’re ever in #Yogyakarta I would highly recommend doing this as a day detour!!

Indonesia I ️ you! Another super early morning tomorrow to make the most of my last day here and we’ve been doing so so much I haven’t had time to edit any photos from the last few days of hiking and rappelling.

This was from the day we stopped at Arborek island. It was supposed to be for diving - which was also incredible - but the highlight was playing with these crazy lil kids jumping off the jetty. This is me, absolutely freezing and totally enchanted - perhaps at first glance this doesn’t seem that interesting but was such a cool dive experience!

We took a small boat from a fishing village and motored upstream into a lagoon surrounded by thick jungle to Labuan Cermin. Diving down about 10 feet, there’s an exact line where the crystal clear fresh water meets the salt water layer sitting underneath. Blurry and murky and warm I could sit half above, with my legs dangling over the trunk of a huge fallen tree while watching salt water fish swim below me. I don’t know why I loved this image the most! Marveling at the simple stuff :)

Eating 7 pieces of pizza before going up a mountain = too many. But waking up 30 min before sunrise = juuust right.

I felt SO lucky to have scored such epic conditions on my super last minute backpacking trip with @kelsealoha and @storyofsage. We actually went to sleep in a blanket of thick mist then woke up to this searing beauty of a sunrise. This trip especially reminded me how much of a difference it makes to have the right gear. Two things I think make the biggest difference: a GOOD backpack with a waist strap that can cinch down tight (I was borrowing one too big for me and it kills your shoulders) and a comfortable sleeping mat (most are only about $60 but trust me when I say you will never ever camp without one again).

Just a little update currently sailing through Raja Ampat in West Papua!! It has been beyond special. We’re not even halfway through a 3 week trip and I am already at a loss for words. LOTS of diving photos coming soon.

There’s a saying in Acro where the base tells the flyer “Hold your shape”, meaning they’re about to change position but the flyer is to remain strong and still. Over time, it’s become a mantra for me to maintain my own integrity, even off the mat.

It feels like the digital world can be so powerfully distracting and competitive that it can be difficult for me to stay in my own headspace. What is everyone else doing and where? Am I missing out or doing this right and is this good enough? Am I tall enough, creative enough, ambitious enough... it’s confusing yet intoxicating.

Hold your shape. It brings me back to me. It’s a contract with myself to evolve out of excitement and not out of envy. Deep down I know my truth and my goals and what sparks joy in me. If you fill your actions with integrity, the right people will always find a way to lift you up.

Thank you to everyone who has supported @savethereef documentary!! One of the craziest take away for me was that one drop of oxybenzone in six Olympic size swimming pools still showed harm to corals. I keep getting asked about reef safe sunscreen and I know it’s a bit confusing. Mostly look for non-nano zinc as the primary ingredient and I tagged some of my favorites. Here in Hawaii most of our beaches look pretty “clean”, but once you learn how to look and where to look the inundation of plastic become hard to un-see. Twenty five of us spent the morning sifting sand for microplastics and collecting pounds and pounds of marine debris with @sustainablecoastlineshawaii and @savethereef that have floated onto our shores from around the world.

Some facts I’m always stunned by:

1. Plastic doesn’t EVER go away it just breaks down into smaller pieces. And whether it’s single use plastics, discarded commercial fishing gear, or daily use items, inevitably, as long as these things are being used they are also ending up in the ocean - 8 million pieces daily.

2. Less than 9% of the world’s plastics are recycled so this is not a sustainable answer.

3. As plastics break down they often give off the same pheromones as food. You can actually see the bite marks on so many of the pieces as fish and other marine life unknowingly nibble on this noxious oil and chemical blend.

Easy ways to help: COMMIT to using a reusable water bottle. Avoid single use plastics and notice when your favorite businesses use them - talk to them about it Bamboo toothbrush. Buy in bulk vs prepackaged. Know your fisherman and eat local fish vs that produced by the large scale commercial fishing industry. Do a plastic audit of your own life. Do it with your friends, make it fun! This is truly a global issue with every person, place and industry contributing- meaning every single person also has the awesome power to help.

Whew k that was long and about 2% of all I learned and could say I’m about to go diving now to remember the ‘why’ behind all these words. I’m better motivated by love than by sadness #protectwhereweplay #savethereef #sustainablecoastlineshawaii

This past week I hiked the farthest I ever have in one camping trip - somewhere around 75 miles - through the jungle in Guatemala. I can’t say too much about the mission yet, but on a personal level the hardest part of the hike for me wasn’t the daily tick removals, the heat when walking 20 miles a day, or my feet feeling like they’ve been put through a blender - it was recording my first podcast which I’ve always been too shy to do️!! I finally did my first practice one on the trail during our last few miles hiking. Kind of beautiful how the outdoors can crossover and make us brave in other areas of life too.
-
I love this quote by Arthur Gold which reminds me to cherish all things that challenge me - “Adversity is like a strong wind. It...tears away from us all but the things that cannot be torn, so that afterward we see ourselves as we really are, and not merely as we might like to be. There’s strength in that kind of honesty with yourself, just like there’s a power that comes from getting somewhere purely on your own two feet :)

Thunderstorms in the desert! I just spent the most incredible week in Moab, UT with the @backcountry team and an awesomely diverse group of go getter humans. I love their core spirit that #FindyourBackcountry means empowering people to get out and connect with that place inside or outside of you that makes you better. It’s always cool to get to know the people behind a company that I’ve worked with for a while and see that their company culture aligns in all that they try to inspire people to do (their office has a rock climbing gym and yoga studio whaaat!)
-
We spent the week climbing, mountain biking and yoga stretching our way through some gorgeous landscapes and learning more about their partnership with @nature_org. On my last day there we got stuck out in not one but two thunderstorms with the craziest clouds I’ve ever seen! I’ve always loved the rain (Kauai actually has one of the rainiest places on Earth!) but definitely didn’t expect to be using my rain jacket as much as I did in the desert! I’m wearing the Marmot Preclip Ecoshell made from recycled nylon waterproof, packs down into its own pocket and with my favorite feature - the underarm zipper :) You can get 15% off your first Backcountry order with code CHELSEA15. #sponsored

Objects in real life may be farther than they first appear.🦒 My best giraffe impressions and some optical illusion fun on our fourth stop with 🇿🇦@meetsouthafrica at Augrabies Falls National Park on our tour celebrating 25 years of democracy in South Africa. This park is known for their massive waterfall but also has mountain biking, a three night backpacking trail, and allows game viewing from your own vehicle :)
-
We were actually just driving to a view point when we came around a corner and saw a small herd curiously looking back at us from atop this nearby hill. I was able to stand just outside the vehicle while @samkolder snapped this with the telephoto lens (goes without saying but you should always use caution and courtesy, never approach animals unless under specific guidance from a certified wildlife expert.)
-
My real takeaway from this stop though was an unlikely love for these gerbil beaver looking things called Dassies. They sit on the rocks in the sun and Sam says it’s me in animal form

I started highlining exactly a year ago in a canyon not too far from this one. Since then there have been many, many moments when I have questioned whether or not I even want to continue.

Because every time right before I stand up I am absolutely terrified. My instincts scream not to move and my mind yells back “Hii it’s fine I’m safe!”. It’s a pit in the bottom of my stomach and quivering fingers and lots of deep breaths. I talk to myself and say “You are strong and this is beautiful and you can do hard things.” I don’t know why it just helps.

To stand again and again even in the face of uncertain outcomes asks for the highest form of trust and belief that difficult things are worth doing.

I realize walking on some rope is trivial compared to some challenges of this world, but I do really like who I am when I highline. I’m proud of the fact that part the time I’m in tears and still asking myself to stand one more time. I give everything I am to this process of being on the line and feel a universal compassion to anyone feeling daunted on their own “line” in life. I hope you sit next to your fear and still give it one more go, bruises be damned. I hope you choose to move forward even when that’s measured in the smallest of steps.

I’m not sure what my goal is for this whole thing. Right now it’s still one foot in front of the other and a little prayer for more grace and enough grit. I think my one takeaway has been that it’s really hard to predict when the next breakthrough will happen, it has to be enough to know that there is magic somewhere in this humbling process. Suddenly, even though the fear felt the same, I unexpectedly took my most steps yet. Nine to be exact, on one inch of webbing 900 feet in the air I was, as you can see, pretty stoked on the progress :)

A huge thank you to @scottyrog for rigging, Tiff @wildsolretreats for all the advice and good tunes, @kylor for documenting and being on this journey with me from the very beginning and to @samkolder for absolutely nailing this drone shot and being the best partner, supporter and motivator in this very adventurous life. Welcome to the world of highlining️

A few hours north of Capetown the landscape changes from towering mountain to miles of desert - home to some world class bouldering and even a highline festival (this past weekend)! @meetsouthafrica

Carved out in a little corner of the bigger Cederberg area sits the Kagga Kamma Nature Reserve built literally into the landscape and run completely off solar energy. Such a beautiful spot, swipe to see a little handheld shot I took from the deck of the cave suites we stayed in :)

Even though the sun was being a bit shy, human powered adventures are always the most satisfying :) We woke up at 4:45am to hike along the 12km Robberg Trail on our first morning with @meetsouthafrica. South Africa’s eastern coast reminded me a bit of Oregon with densely forested gorges, waterfalls, super fun sandbars, and misty coastline hikes. Other than the seals and a few local fishermen we had the whole huge beach to ourselves!

6 hours and 91 dunes later we arrived for the night at Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park, a stark and wildly beautiful preserve in the Kalahari desert. It’s white salt pans against red sand, tiny Pygmy falcons the size of my hand, and herds of oryxes with their long spearlike horns.

It’s out there, really really out there - like being in an ocean of land around you. With land contributed from South Africa , Namibia, and Botswana it’s one of the largest wilderness areas in the world (3.6 million hectares).

We stayed in simple thatched chalets at @xauslodge, a community owned accommodation benefiting the Khomani San and Mier communities and had the privilege of listening to the bushmen tell some of their legends to us while we sat under the full moon.

Definitely barely scratched the surface and would love to see their famous black-maned lions, but we did get one unforgettably vivid sunset. @meetsouthafrica #InstaMeetSouthAfrica

#sponsored // Talk about unexpected - over lunch our friend told us about a short hike just outside the city. A few hours later we were watching the sun set here with the craziest view! I’m very honored to be continuing my partnership with @CanonUSA, but I’ll be switching things up for the next few months to test out their mirrorless #EOSM50 camera! I thought what better place to start than the incredibly visual India️
-
So for all of you that were messaging me asking about the photo series in my India stories - this is what it was shot on! This little camera packs so much into a small body. I LOVE using it. It’s one of the smallest cameras I’ve ever used (check out my stories!) and it comes at a really reasonable price point. For travel, especially a trip like this where I was doing carry-on only, having an ultra portable set up is so liberating!
-
I particularly loved using the 18-150mm lens while walking around the streets and having the ability to capture such a multitude of focal lengths. Feel free to ask any questions but I’m stoked and can’t wait to bring it on my next trip. #shootforgreatness #India

The road less traveled.🇿🇦 In celebration of 25 years of democracy @meetsouthafrica sent five of us teams around the country to document some of their most loved locations. It’s been on a whirlwind week doing everything from paddling up a canyon in Storms River to driving 11 hours across the northern cape to get to the very remote Kgalagdi desert. This one was taken in the Cederberg amongst these rock formations that seemed like giant dinosaurs coming out of the red earth. More to come soon.

South Africa🇿🇦 round...5? Since I first went last February it’s one of those places I can’t get enough of. Here are some photos from my last trip there with @jacques_crafford when we did the Panorama Route in Mpumalanga. All these photos were taken just a short distance from one another! So much diversity.

Crossing my fingers for another incredible and safe adventure for the next ten days #Southafrica

I love this photo. I think half the reason for that is remembering @emmett_sparling shooting with his camera in one hand reflector tucked under his chin, us trying to coordinate a small spin and some hair movement while he’s holding my saree and the fact that I’m wearing jeans stepping in copious amounts of bird poo.🤷‍️ This probably isn’t the pretty pretty princess caption I was supposed to write for this haha, it’s ok. Walking at sunrise in the mosque next to the Taj Mahal it’s hard not to be in awe.
The Mughals believed perfect symmetry and proportions brought one closer to paradise and thus built with the utmost attention to this ideal. Structurally, it is grand and ornate down to the flower and scriptural inlays.

Yet centuries later I like that the stories we tell about it are always of a King who loved his lost wife so much he built her the most beautiful building perhaps in history.

If places are the stories we tell about them, I think the Taj is so loved because it was built by love.️ #ChelseaxIndia

From the morning @emmett_sparling and I watched the sunrise puuja and got blessed. This lovely spunky woman was also being blessed and with no English sort of told us what to do. She had a big laugh, a few teeth, and loved the portraits Emmett took of her. I don’t usually feel comfortable taking photos with people but every once in a while it feels right. I hope she wouldn’t mind me sharing this one with this message

Colors and chaos. India has been a full spectrum of emotions. No other place or trip has made me feel so much. It forces you awake in every sense, which can manifest as both a blessing and a test.
-
If you watched my stories I didn’t have the best time at Holi. In short, as a female traveler Holi in the streets is an experience I would be very wary of. I think it could be really cool if you go to private events or attend in the morning much earlier in the week (other friends did this and had a better time). I knew it would be intense, but underestimated how uncomfortable/intrusive/aggressive it would be. We all crave the “real” experiences, but what I experienced was anything but cultural, historical, or representative of the kindness I’ve otherwise been shown here in India.
-
It made me sad and angry that my very presence as a woman made me feel like I can’t or I’m not allowed to attend a fun event. It doesn’t sit well with my egalitarian sense of self. I was pissed at being groped - drunk or crowds, India or not wtf people? - But it also makes me much more sympathetic to the women (or men) across the globe who deal with this in ways big or small. So foreigners or friends let’s ALL go the extra mile to look out for each other and to ask people if they need help when we’re not sure. ACTIONS at the time mean a lot more than apologies from a hundred people later. I can tell you it meant a lot when a stranger put himself out there to protect me or the numerous times people give directions when I’m lost. Then let’s also do our part as travelers, be aware, well informed and culturally respectful

On our last day in Udaipur @emmett_sparling and I had a meet up with a group of female engineering students and creatives. What started at a little 15 min talk turned into a full day adventure, including buying this traditional saree and scootering to a nearby mountain for sunset. We sat by the river and talked future stuff, religion in our life, customs, how the words for numbers work in India (lahks and crores!)

Proud to be partnering with @backcountry this year in our shared belief in empowering people to try new things big, small, and in your own backyard🤗 So many of you DMed me about this suit from the day with the dolphins! It’s called the cosmo bodysuit and in my very humble, very swim-obsessed opinion it’s the perfect black suit. The fabric is made in the US from 56% plant fibers and 25% recycled nylon from plastic bottles (love that this is getting to be a more common option!!). Until recently I didn’t realize how much of our clothing particles make their way into our ocean (mostly through washing). Swimwear is particularly prone to degradation since its exposed to harsh sun and salt. Although they tend to be more pricey when I can replace my old bikinis with more eco friendly options that are this cute - Win win happy Chelsea🥰
