The resounding takeaway: SO many of you are craving more structure + real progress and less chaos + confusion when it comes to how to sell your work. I SO get it. If that sounds like you, definitely go give that video a watch! .

The 3 Things You MUST Focus on When Building Your Art Biz
//
When I first started this art business thing I quickly found myself overwhelmed and treading water.
.
.
I was doing all the things (writing the emails, doing the 'gram, getting my website colors to look amaze), but I felt disorganized and ungrounded because I didn't have a clear action plan. As a result, the sales were VERY unpredictable. And I felt like things were going nowhere. .
.

It's been 4+ years of trial and error. Of endless learning.
Not even counting my previous years as an online entrepreneur in other industries.
.
.
In that time, I've wittled down this creative business thing to the ESSENTIAL things that actually work. Because the whole reason I got into this was to have more time and resources to make more art. .
.
I posted a video this morning on IGTV about the most important things you need to know on when building your creative biz.
If you're wanting to sell your art, I recommend finding your way to it! (IGTV is somewhere around here?)
.
In the video I share.... . --> The very approach that'll save you from stress + overwhelm . --> Your personal machine for passive income
. --> How to create predictable profits . -->The NUMBER ONE determining factor in if you sink or swim in creative business . --> and more.
.
.
In other news I'm SO excited about all the amazing artists saying yes to growth and intentional business who've signed up for The Art Biz Roadmap.
.
.
This course is the exact information I wish someone would've handed me when I first started, and I can't wait to share it with you.

*NEW COURSE ALERT*
If you’re an artist or maker who wants to sell more of your work, this is something you're going to get TONS of value from.
.
.
In my past years of teaching, mentoring and being immersed in this creative community, I’ve noticed is that there are way too many talented artists and makers only doing a FRACTION as well as they could be because they don’t know how to effectively and easefully sell their work online. .
.
They’re daunted by the online world. Overwhelmed with the amount of information out there. Or doubtful that their work will be seen in a sea of beautiful creations and products. (can you relate?)
.
.
And hey-- I get it! Setting up an online business that yields consistent sales and that represents YOU as an artist is NOT an easy thing to piece together on your own. .
.
I’ve been working in the online world for six years, selling my work professionally for four and have spent a lot of time and energy (and trial and error!) mastering the strategies that work.
.
.
I’m here to tell you that you absolutely CAN flourish and get your work out there. You CAN find buyers who will happily pay what your work is worth. You just need to learn the essential components that will make your business work for YOU, and let go of the time wasters that take time away from creating the thing you love.

I created The Art Biz Roadmap to give you the exact action plan you need. It's exactly what I wish I had (the whole picture--dots connected and all!) when I started selling my work.
.
.
You'll learn everything from....
.
.
-- The essential components your website MUST have
-- How to build your email list and write emails people can't WAIT to read
-- Setting up your Instagram to SHINE and how to use it for GROWTH
-- My exact pricing formula (no more intuitive pricing!)
-- Launching a new collection of work with success
-- and SO much more
.
.
I'm so excited to finally be sharing this information and to dive in.
Head to the link in bio to sign up and read all about it.

Making art + selling it are not enemies //
.
If you've felt lost in terms of getting your work out there, or worried that focusing on sales will take away from your art this is for you:
.
.
I know that, as creatives, many of us get an icky (or just overwhelmed ) feeling when it comes to their art being a business.
.
.
But the truth is, receiving financial support in return for we do actually pushes us to creatively GROW.
.
.
Cash flow allows for more time to create.

Having our work seen by the right people leads to commissions and licensing and publications that inspire our next moves.

Even just connecting with collectors who resonate with our work can fuel months in the studio.
.
.

In my experience, the more I've gotten my work out there (and received money for it!) the more I've been able to expand as an artist. .
.

But those profits don't just show up at our front doorstep.
We have to create the container for them.
And that container for receiving money in exchange for what we do is our business.
.
. *However, * a business that WORKS and that's joyful to run is extremely challenging to piece together all on your own. (There's SO much information out there. Not all of it good).
.
.
In fact, it's taken me YEARS to land on the right formula and get into an easeful, predictable flow of things.
To understand what gets amazing results and what's a total waste of energy.
.
.

Which is why I'm SO excited to bring to you my brand new online course,  THE ART BIZ ROADMAP.
The doors officially open today.
.
.
In this 4 week course you'll learn how to strategically sell your work online and build a sustainable business doing what you love.
.
.
Everything from pricing, to building your newsletter and sending killer emails, to community growth and branding... you'll leave these four weeks with the exact action plan you need to set up shop, grow your reach, build relationships, and bring in the sales.
.
.
You can learn all about it with the link in bio. I hope to see you in class!

Since sharing these pieces that are a shift in style from previous work, I’ve gotten a lot of feedback about being so brave and risky and bold.
While that wasn’t my original intention, it was what this moment in my process was calling for: an external change to represent many internal ones.
So, from my heart to yours I want to say: thank you for noticing.
In this online world where you have people watching your choices and shifts with every release (some of you have been here for years! ), it can be scary to put out something different. Thank you, as always, for cheering me on. .

The full collection, “Scenes From A Vibrant Life” is now on view and available for purchase in the shop. The remaining small works on paper were just added yesterday ️ Link in bio to get there.

The pre-sale of my new collection, Scenes From a Vibrant Life is now LIVE.
And (if you missed the memo) I'm offering 30% OFF during the pre-sale period just until Friday at midnight PST.

My intention with this collection was to not hold back.
To dive into celebration and aliveness and let them guide the way.
To break the habit of putting a ceiling joy and limitations on my colors. .
.
What I ended up finding in my work was a whole lot of delight.
.
.
And I realized that maybe this is what we need in life, too:
Permission to celebrate the really great things.
.
.
A perfectly timed sarcastic joke.
Sun rays hitting the ocean at the most luminous angle.
The moment when you feel, just for a second, that something greater might have your back.
.
.
My hope is that this work serves as a reminder: it's safe to feel really, really good.
You're allowed.

Check out the released pieces with the link in bio.
And--I've also added link to my framing recommendations in the product description!
I know finding the right frame can be a headache, so hopefully this makes that part easy, breezy for ya.

New work dropping TOMORROW at 10 am PST.
It's been a minute since I released new pieces and I'm feeling...excited? nervous? all of the things?
Will they land with people, or feel too far from what I've done in the past? Will they stand out against the backdrop amazing work that floods this platform daily, or be more of the same?
These are the questions that come up for me whenever I make a new, vulnerable shift in my aesthetic.
But the rewards (even if they are only the internal kind) are always so, so worth it.

I hope you'll stop by here tomorrow and check them out.

I spent yesterday helping a good friend pick out frames and decide on the layout for her art show and was reminded of how much the right frame can elevate a piece.
I don't sell my work with frames often, but when I do you *know* they're beautiful and intentionally selected for the art. I'm kind of obsessed with these gold floaters ️

oh hay. It's been about 45983 years since I said hello and told you about the gal behind these paintings.
So --hi!! If you don't really know me yet, I'm Devon.
.
.
I'm 28 and live in sunny Southern California near Laguna Beach area. .
.
I'm a self-taught painter.  I used to feel self-conscious about that. But more recently, I'm proud of it because I know that navigating this on my own and holding it down for those of us who did not go to art school is exactly how it was meant to be for me.
.
.
I'm a sun Pisces, moon Scorpio, ascendant Gemini for those of you who speak that language (astrology is my obsession).
Also a Projector (human design).
Ennegram 5 w4.
INFP.
Feeler, introvert, sensitivo, dreamer, beauty seeker, thinker, information lover with a dash of sarcasm.
Part alien, probably. .
.
My paintings are a mix of how things feel to me and an exotic place that I imagine and/or feel into that is not of this world. Maybe it's a dream or another dimension or just an idea. But it makes me happy. I hope it makes others happy, too. A friend once called it Devon's floofy land which I think is pretty accurate. .
.
Outside of painting as therapy, I'm also pretty into actual therapy: trauma work, time in nature, alternative medicine, meditation, all that jazz. I bring a lot of my background with this into my mentoring work with other artists (which fills my heart to the MAX btw). I'm believer that reaching the depths of our artistic potential is an inner journey, as well as a creative one.
.
.
More human type things: I love TV shows (omg, just started Euphoria. Anyone??), the ocean, road trips, painting BIG (currently on a mural kick--hmu), dancing...dancing all the time, chocolate of all kinds and daily naps.
.
.
Okay--that was long! What about you? Do we have any of the above in common? Are you also part alien?Tell me about yourself!

It's been a busy July! And it's only the...8th?
And as I looked at the month ahead, I realized that being consistent with my studio practice might not happen. Sometimes that makes me a little nervous (will I forget how to paint? will I forget who I am?!), but I also know that whenever I take a break and fill up on the other aspects of life, my practice is that much more energized when I return

Every once in awhile you try on a new tool or medium that changes everything. I often recommend this to students who feel stuck or like they want to start setting themselves apart.

About a year ago for me, that was spray paint. It was around the time that I wanted my work to feel softer, more dreamy, clouded. I loved washes, but they just weren't giving me that high-in-the-sky feeling I wanted to capture.

I'm still on a hunt to find the most powdery, soft pastel colors sprays out there. So far @montanacans has done me super well in that department and continues to been my ultimate fav ️

Oh hey! It's been a minute since I've popped up in your feed. That's because I took a short break to visit friends, lay in the sun, paint without documentation and enjoy the quiet of being screen-free.

I wish there was a way to connect and share without feeling chained to this little app. Any one else?

No matter how organized I try to keep it, 10 minutes into painting its pure chaos.

It’s the LAST DAY to grab your spot in the Series Strategy Workshop. . . If you’ve been wanting to make your style more cohesive (or understand more of what your true style even IS), asses how to focus your energy and commit to an idea, and learn ho

Do you ever feel like you have so many ideas and don't know which one's to follow?

Or feel afraid to put in a lot of time and energy into a single idea because-- what if you end up hating it?
.
.

I get it. But I think these feelings (and MANY others) hold us back from creating the big, beautiful work that we could be putting out there.
.
.

The most transformative and rewarding thing I do as an artist is cycle through the start-to-finish process of creating series of work.
But reaping the growth and reward requires following through, exercising decisiveness and also, uncovering what's really important in our work.
.
.

I created The Series Strategy Workshop to give you a roadmap along that journey. To help you focus in on what's important for YOU, expand on your inspiration, cut out the overwhelm and move forward on creating a series of work that you'll LOVE.
.
.

It's one of my favorite things to teach because students always see BIG changes in their *confidence* and in the real quality of their work by the end of it all.
.
.

The workshop is open for enrollment (just until Monday!) and we start next week. It's lifetime access so you can take a beautifully long summer (or more!) to apply all you learn to the creation of your next collection

All the info is with the link in my bio!

// In case you missed the announcement yesterday:
The Series Strategy workshop just opened for enrollment!
.
.
In this online workshop I'll take you through the start to finish journey of creating a series of work. .
.

We'll start at the foundation: evaluating what you've done up until this point, getting clear on the right artistic direction for YOU and understanding what your true aesthetic is really about. You'll really hone in on your voice in this part of the process. .
.

Then I'll take you through the pre-series work of gathering your ideas, experimenting and expanding. .
.

All the way through to committing to a concept and building it out in a way that’s cohesive and professional. .
.
It's tons of fun and you'll come out with a body of work you love and feel crazy proud of. Not to mention you'll learn SO much about your process and yourself as an artist. .
.

Something I’ve seen within myself and with other artists is that we tend to be REALLY great at painting our hearts out … but not always so great with focus, cohesion and honing our voice.

Can you relate? .
.

For myself, I spent years in this inspired, yet aimless, phase.
When someone would ask to see my work ,I would cringe.  I painted a ton, but I didn't feel like I had anything to show that really represented ME-- just a bunch of potential versions of what I could be.
I think I had this idea that if I just kept showing up to create, consistency and cohesion would naturally happen on it's own. That it was just a matter of time before my work became strong and recognizable.
.
.
I'm not saying this absolutely can't happen.
It can.
But it's definitely the long way around.
.
.
My work REALLY started to shift when I learned to apply the right intention, structure, personal evaluation and direction.
I had integrate NEW strategies in order to get new results.
.
.
With each collection I gain more of an appreciation for the level of DEPTH that creating a body of work brings. How it strengthens my voice and brings out more of myself.

I now see now that cohesion in our work is actually an expansion on our voice-- not a restriction like I once might have thought.
I love the process of building out a series and it’s now something I get super excited to guide others through.
.
.

Looking to weave your voice through all of your pieces and create a series you feel super proud of?
The Series Strategy workshop just opened for enrollment today. This is a deep and fun two-part workshop on finding direction and building a body of work and I love love love teaching this one.

I hope you’ll join us! You can get all the info with the link in my bio.

The joy radiating from these photos is the exact feeling I get when people match up with a piece of my art that's meant for them.
.
.
In this case, at the #rebloomtogether retreat, I had made 13 mini energy paintings before meeting anyone or, really, knowing what I was getting myself into. .
.

On the last day, everyone blindly/intuitively selected their pieces and the unveiling of each was SO scarily on point. Almost everyone matched up with a theme that had come up throughout the weekend together and was so THEM. .

I love when art is magical like that. It's kind of my reason for all of this. The magic. .
.
If I didn’t need to sell it as part of this whole staying alive and eating thing I’d give it as gifts all the time. Best feeling ever. .
.
Thank you @lovesarahbryn for capturing these beautiful faces ️

I did a little showcasing on my stories yesterday on how I deal with resistance and hard feels within the process.
.
.

I have a small notebook I bring everywhere that I call my Book of Stories.

Aka my Book of Stories That I Tell Myself That Aren't True.
.
.

When I get agitated without foreseeable reason or a dark cloud starts to hover over my process, I pause. I take out my storybook and write out anything going through my mind.
.
.

I think anyone can benefit from doing this, but it's *especially* helpful when you're a creator.
.
.
Creating = clearing .
.
Pushing the edge, going into the unknown and birthing something new WILL bring up your stuff along with it. [I often go through phases where I leave the studio in a funky mood, even after seemingly decent days. It took me forever to figure out that this is why.]
.
.

It's part of the deal.

The question is: how *do* you deal?
.
.

I find that if I can see it as part of the process and not let the stories get away from me (and give them a nice place to live) I'm much more likely to keep painting.
Which is the big win .
.
What about you guys? What do you do when the voices and resistance creeps in? I want to know if and how other artists stay centered through the turmoil. Tell me below.

As an abstract artist something I’m constantly focused on is progressing my style.
.
.
Color and shape and energy and composition and how they all get used together is everything. .
.

It’s my intention that you can see the common thread of me-ness in all my work, but that nothing repeats and every piece has a tiny surprise. A risk taken or something unexpected to separate it from the rest.
.
.

Though it’s ALWAYS a work in progress, balancing cohesion and innovation has gotten easier over the years. I think that’s because I’ve found a rhythm that works for me, as well a direction thats engaging and challenging, but also feels like home. .
.
I’m thinking about putting out my best tips for strengthening and developing your style in this week’s newsletter. Is that something you guys would want to hear about?
If so, let me know below.
Also, please do share where you might be hitting a wall (if you feel compelled) so I can speak to where you're at!

[This is a little piece of a painting I'm really excited about right now. ️I've been embracing all the light pinks and diving into how I can express its personality in new ways, too. I'm kind of obsessed.]

Around this time last year I was preparing to join artist, @laurahollicksoulartstudio in her home studio  for International Soul Art Day.
Being immersed in Laura's signature processes and creating all day with four other amazing women was POWERFUL. I believe it set much of what was to come over the next year in motion.
(can you tell how magical we were feeling after the two days from our big smiles? ️) .
.

This year, I'll be participating in Soul Art Day on June 5th from the comfort of my home and your'e invited to do the same! .
.

International Soul Art Day gathers thousands of people from across the globe to create art together for the day.
Laura will walk us through a few soulful processes and there will also be two live discussions (one of which I'll be a part of!) on art as medicine and art as activism (great topics, right?). You don't need any prior experience or skills to participate, only the call to connect with your creativity. .
.

It’s totally free and the day has a way of leaving you ️super charged️ You can sign up at www.soulartday.com

I can't wait! xx

STUDY SALE ANNOUNCEMENT// Tomorrow at 10 am PST I'll be releasing four studies for sale on my insta stories.
.
.
Studies are a HUGE part of my studio practice.
They're a bit more involved than a sketch and I typically do them on large pieces of paper.
This gives me plenty of room to flesh out an idea, but it's still quick and low-pressure enough to allow for risk, big mistakes and creating things that I'll throw away and never feel obligated to return to again.
.
.
In this recent period of exploration and experimentation I've been diving deep into my studies game and, as im just about ready to transition out of this phase, I've decided to offer up my favorites for sale.
.
.

Purchasing a study is a wonderful way to offer support, and to get your hands on a fairly large original at a super budget-friendly price.

All four studies are 18 x 24 in. on paper and prices at $100 plus shipping.
.
.

It'll be first come first serve so check my stories at tomorrow at 10 am PST tomorrow for dibs!

This is one that will be available ️🤗

There was an overwhelming response of resonance with yesterday’s newsletter on Feeling Lost on Your Art Path (replies are coming!), so I want to share a bit of it here in case it's what you need to hear rn.
.
.
If you often get an influx of inspiration but then become paralyzed by thoughts like: .
.

Wait, where is this going? Will the effort and cost be worth it?
Will it be sellable? Or the kind of thing a gallery would show? How would I even get a show?

Will my art just collect dust forever?
.
. ...you're not alone, friend.
.
.

Here's the thing though:

We often have to make the work FIRST. (read that again)
The art journey is an exercise in trust and we have to trust that our creative nudges have purpose.
.
.

They might lead us down a path we end up hating so that we can get it over with and move on to the next thing.
Or they might reveal a game-changing body of work.
But the point is, if you don't put the paint on the canvas you'll never find out.
.
.

My best advice in this department? Please please please don't get caught up in the should's. *That you SHOULD have a plan. That you SHOULD have a clear reason.* No, you shouldn't.
Not necessarily. .
.

Puzzle pieces of the path often come to us out of order and there's nothing wrong with that. (‍️ I'm pretty much always creating in the dark here.) Know that the name of the game is that you probably will NOT know why you want to create a thing or what purpose it will serve.

The more you can accept this as an inherent part of the journey, the more ease you'll have in creating the work that will lead you where your heart is most wanting to go. .
.

Happy creating this week friends. Sending a heavy dose of trust and courage ️
