When I started up the trail, I knew finding this reflection spot was going to be a long shot, but then I managed to make it just in time for sunset after meeting @chadtorkelsen on the trail and navigating there together (who helped me snap these photos). The Climbing Cholitas. ⠀
⠀
My starting point was the thought that people want to engage the narrative behind the images as much as the images themselves. I began trawling the internet looking for inspirational stories from around the world that might pique my interest. I stumbled across an image of the Cholitas relating to a story about them having just summited Mt. Aconcagua, which I instantly thought had potential. Aside from the obvious visual fascination provided by the fact they climb while wearing their traditional, colorful Aymara dresses, as is always the case with these personal projects, it’s their backstory that really sold it to me.⠀
⠀
Check out the Link in our Bio for the full backstory on the climbing Cholitas!⠀

One of my favorite places in the world and one I’m fortunate to have grown up near, the Garden of the Gods. As a child, my dad @dougladzinski Would take my brother @scott_ladzinski and sister @girlguide79 here a few times a week to play and explore. It was where I learned to rock climb and hone in my love for photography, hunting for landscape compositions. The park has a benevolent history: Charles Perkins purchased this land in 1879 and in 1909 donated it to the city of Colorado Springs with the stipulation that it always remained a free, public park. It’s among Colorado’s most visited attractions and brings in millions of visitors each year.⠀

Missing this place and all the thoughtful team members // Powerful words by @rishisugla “As we made our way down the footpath that crisscrossed long abandoned Soviet military roads and rusted iron barrels, we marveled over the chance to see this site rarely unmasked by cloud. Places like this, when they allow themselves to be seen, make easy claims that they deserve our care and attention. And maybe that’s what this place was asking us for. As my group made a final descent down to the black beach, built up slowly through millennia of breaking down basalt into sand, I wondered about other places rendered invisible not by fog but by other means. Places and people with beauty not of the jaw dropping variety that can make people stop at first sight, but those of a more subtle kind of aesthetic. Ones imbued with history and culture, from microbes to humans, that aren’t so easily captured by footage. For groundwater sitting for millennia beneath the surface. For worms sifting through soil. How do we lift the fog and remind ourselves of their beauty too? So we can not only care about places like this, which are worth our attention and heart, but for that which transcends the physical in ways much more difficult to explain.” #fromkurilswithlove⠀

I spent the morning in my tent, listening to the eclectic jungle noises of the creatures living in the vast canopy, as the rain pounded down, feeling a sense of extraordinary gratitude. Thinking back to when I was a six-year-old, discovering climbing in a rock gym at my brother’s birthday party, never in my wildest dreams did I imagine where it would take me.⠀
⠀
The exploratory vehicle that climbing has provided, the potential to discover and to learn about new places around the world, and the beauty these places offer makes me smile with curiosity and excitement.⠀
⠀
I am proud to be here, in a place I didn’t even know existed on a map, with a team of badass women that I organized into a team. I feel so inspired by our world, and I woke up today, feeling something different. It was this light sensation that this is just the beginning. It’s easy to get trapped in the minutia of a climb, to worry about sending and conditions, weather letting up, my own ability to climb... but in the end, does it all matter as much as the journey? ⠀
⠀
I have had so many different experiences within my own career of climbing. I’ve felt these ups and downs from ‘on-paper’ success to disappointment, divisive letdown, total exuberance, and disbelief that comes with achieving what I didn’t know I was capable of.⠀
⠀
Climbing has shaped me and continues to shape me, but I think it’s not just the physical act of climbing, it’s this experience of it. I look back to points in my career that I’m not as proud of; from immaturity to just not being as aware of my surroundings, and I also look back to my past with a sense of dignity and strength, knowing that I have upheld my own values. ⠀
⠀
I am not perfect, and I am still learning, but through moments of stillness, through new scenarios and exploration, I feel this confidence that everything is the way that it should be in these moments. ⠀
⠀

The disappearance of ice. ⠀
⠀
On the same date in July for the last two years, I’ve photographed the Qaleraliq outlet glacier in South Greenland. This year I had the opportunity to travel with a local captain named Jørgen, born and raised in the nearby town of Narsaq. On our approach the glacier, he stopped the boat in the middle of the fjord. We sat floating in open water, puzzled by why he’d stopped. He then shared a childhood memory from this area, drifting along the edge of a towering glacial wall that once existed in right there in that open water, almost 5 kilometers further out from where it sits today. It was almost unimaginable to hear how much the glacier had retreated in his lifetime, from one huge outlet in the fjord to what is now three smaller and disconnected outlets, two of which are now considered as dead-ice. ⠀
⠀
He told us that the retreat has accelerated drastically over the last few decades and that this year was the first time he’d heard the ice cracking in the middle of winter, a clear sign of rising temperatures.⠀
⠀
As we left the area, he made a note that we were potentially documenting the final years of existence for this glacier. That thought hasn’t left my mind since.⠀

On my stories, I've been sharing my raw images with my edited version, and someone requested to see this photo that I took inside a glow worm cave in New Zealand. Well, this is the RAW photo. No editing. No filters. No nothing. Just the raw image that came out of my camera after an exposure time of 275 seconds at f/1.4 and 1600 iso. I commonly get the question if I had to stand there the entire time like that. The answer is, no. I turned on the headlamp for about 3 seconds to expose the area I was standing and then turned it off. Once off, it was so dark in there, the camera couldn't see me any longer, and I could relax. While I waited for the camera to finish taking the photo, I just stood there in absolute silent awe of this place while I listened to the song Nuvole Bianche by Ludovico Einaudi quietly playing from my phone and echoing thru the cavern at around nine at night. It was pure magic and an experience that, even now as I write this over a year later, fill me with that same wonder and gratitude for this beautiful little planet that we live on.⠀

Rare footage of the most endangered whale on earth, the North American right whale. I captured this yesterday in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, and can’t believe the rainbow created by its spout. These whales were almost whaled to extinction in the 19th century. In the mid 20th century illegal whaling kept the numbers down despite many efforts to resuscitate the population. Having seen a number of whales on our trip so far, I’ve noticed that most whales dive deep upon first sight of our boat. Whereas this whale, the right whale, hovered around the surface and near the boat for hours. We think that’s why they are endangered and apparently is even where the name came from. Essentially they were the easiest targets in the whaling frenzy of a bygone era. A friend of mine sent me a note that @nrdc_org has launched a global campaign to save these magical creatures. Let us know if you want photos or footage; we’ve got a bunch now! Pretty stoked we were able to spend a few hours with this guy. ⠀

My vision as a photographer has narrowed. It’s easy to walk up to a spot and instantly know where and how I want to shoot it. This is a good and a bad thing... because the images have increasingly got more staged, to please my ultra particular eye. Rarely am I satisfied with just capturing the moment as it happens. What I like about cliff jumping is that even tho it’s a planned shot, there’s still no faking that jump. I had to get a running start on this one to clear trees and rocks on the way down. Winning is just basically having a lot of fun doing it and my goals, for sure, are always to try to be the best I can possibly be and that requires me testing myself against the world's best consistently. ⠀

As we near the Finale of 'The Line' we take a look back. ⠀
⠀
The boys went high, putting in fresh tracks on their proposed new route on Mt. Everest. They went up to just over 7200 meters in a push, clawing up the blue ice and snow in the lower couloir. At this altitude, everything here is a grind. There’s nothing simple about pioneering in the big mountains, it’s a quest into the unknown full of excitement and anxiety. Acclimating is a savage necessity to push higher. @coryrichards and @estebantopomena crushed it, solved some unanswered questions and also came upon some new ones. ⠀
⠀
Stay tuned for more for the Final Episode this Friday! ⠀

Diving even deeper into who Cory is and what led him to setting this daring and dangerous goal for himself. In ‘The Line’ series, we looked at the training, psychology, and routines associated with the goal of creating a new line on the world’s tallest peak. We also took a peek at Cory’s outlook on life how he uses climbing as a platform to talk about life, goals, and mental health. “When you’re riding the line between life and death, the clarity is tack sharp,” Cory says.⁣⠀⠀

Still can’t get over being here. This magical place. I’ve got so many images and moments to share from the last few weeks and can’t wait. It’s been a journey all of the world and wouldn’t trade it for anything. Always appreciate the love and support from each one of you, and it doesn’t go unnoticed.⠀
