Charlie Brown’s baby sister Sally first appeared in Peanuts 60 years ago today in a strip published on August 23, 1959. Sally was introduced as a newborn a few months prior on May 26, 1959 and was the first character whose birth was recorded in Peanuts. Sassy and sweet, smart but sometimes a little ditzy, the many sides of Sally Brown make her a unique and beloved part of Peanuts. #SallyDay

Peppermint Patty first appeared in Peanuts 53 years ago today in a strip published on August 22, 1966. Patricia “Peppermint Patty” Reichardt’s distinct personality, athleticism, and trademark sandals, made for a strong new character in the strip and a true “rare gem” for Peanuts. “Patty has been a good addition for me, and I think could almost carry another strip by herself. A dish of candy sitting in our living room inspired her name. So in this case I created the character to fit the name, and Peppermint Patty came into being. —Charles M. Schulz #PeppermintPattyDay

“I suppose cartooning and magic are similar in a way because we both do something along the way and then pull a surprise out of the tiny box at the end.” —Charles M. Schulz

Charles Schulz loved sleight of hand and stage magic of all kinds. Schulz more than dabbled in magic, and like most things he found fascinating, brought magic into the panels of Peanuts. This strip is from May 17, 1956.

Charles Schulz was about as far from counter-culture movements as could be. But that didn’t stop him from being aware of the cultural shifts and growing pains of the time. A time that produced what we know today as the Woodstock Music Festival: Three Days of Peace and Music.

The iconic Woodstock poster by Arnold Skolnick was designed and produced in a matter of days and became one of music history’s most famous images. The example seen here (currently on display in the exhibition #PeaceLoveWoodstock) is signed by the artist.

Snoopy’s brother Spike first appeared in Peanuts 44 years ago today in a strip published on August 13, 1975. With his mournful expression, often hangdog personality, and gaunt frame Spike was a brilliant counterpart to the self-satisfied and well-fed Snoopy. The Mojave Desert where Spike makes his home was a familiar setting for Charles Schulz; his family lived in Needles, California for a short time when he was a small boy. Schulz found Spike to be a versatile character; he appeared in over 400 Peanuts comic strips. #SpikeDay

Snoopy's appearance and personality have changed probably more than those of any of the other characters. As my drawing style loosened, Snoopy was able to do more things, and when I finally developed the formula of using his imagination to dream of being many heroic figures, the strip took on a completely new dimension. —Charles M. Shortly after the assassination of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Los Angeles schoolteacher, Harriet Glickman, wrote to Schulz regarding the integration of Peanuts. I had been reading the Life magazine article about the Woodstock festival and I had the little bird in the strip. … I thought Woodstock would be a good name for this bird ... —Charles M. Schulz

Though Charles Schulz was not a direct part of the emerging “hippie” counter-culture of the late-1960s, his daily cartoon strips were haunted by alienation and doubt, fear and loneliness, themes with which millions of readers could identify. More than that, Peanuts is about the power of friendship, the impact of devotion, and the power of love, even when touched with naivete. Those qualities are found perhaps in their most pure form in the character Schulz created and named after the music festival, Woodstock.

This summer celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Woodstock Music Festival at the Museum and explore just how the favorite feathered friend of Peanuts fans of all generations came to be. The exhibition #PeaceLoveWoodstock is on view through March 8, 2020.

The feelings behind Charles Schulz’s Little Red-Haired Girl stories in Peanuts were partly inspired by the music of ‪Hank Williams‬. Schulz recalled, I get a lot of ideas when I feel most depressed. Strangely enough, I got the whole idea for the series I've done of Charlie Brown and his struggles to meet the little red-haired girl from listening to ‪Hank Williams‬'s songs...'Your Cheating Heart' and all those lonesome-cowboy songs. I can put a record on and it will affect me so much that I'll get into the same mood as the person who is singing. I pick up all sorts of ideas that way. This strip is from October 4, 1969.

In celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 Moon Landing, here is Charles Schulz’s Silver Snoopy Award pin, currently on display in the Museum’s exhibit To the Moon: Snoopy Soars with NASA.

The Silver Snoopy Award is a major feature of the Manned Flight Awareness Program that launched in March 1968. The award is bestowed personally by astronauts and recognizes outstanding performance contributing to flight safety and mission success. Every recipient of the award receives a Silver Snoopy pin which has flown in space and a signed certificate from the astronaut giving the award.

“I think having Snoopy go to the Moon was the greatest triumph of all. This is because cartoonists have been sending their characters into space for years in their stories, but mine was the first character who really went to the Moon. Snoopy lapel pins were actually carried by the astronauts into space.” —Charles M. Schulz, 1986
