NEW YORK: Re-introducing Florian, a cute girl I brought back with me from my recent trip to South Korea with @hsiglobal. She is now officially available in New York at @AnimalHaven!

Early July, South Korean authorities shut down the Gupo market, one of their country’s largest dog meat markets, where live dogs were killed to order. The 16 vendors who were still active on the market were offered compensation to start alternative, humane businesses. The 80 dogs rescued from the market, including Florian, were being sold as “dog tonics”. Sorry to be graphic (don’t read if this might be too much), but this is a pretty horrific practice where dogs are boiled alive and liquefied in large pressure cookers, and sold as “elixirs” that are believed to cure various ailments and increase masculine virility. .

Florian herself was apparently sold to the market by her owner. And there she was, awaiting her fate, the moment a client would come in and point at her and say “I want to buy this tonic”. .

During my recent trip to South Korea, I was asked if I would escort a dog back to New York, and of course I jumped on the occasion! Escorting is a fantastic way to help rescues, and for smaller dogs it saves them a lot of money (about $150 to fly a dog in cabin, as opposed to about $1,000 in cargo!). I was teamed up with Florian.
.
If you followed my IG stories, you know she did amazing during our journey back to the US. She was very quiet, obedient, stayed in her carrier for the whole 15-16h we were onboard in the plane and no potty! She is virtually housetrained (will need to adjust to new routine / surroundings). She is very, very sweet and gentle. She was a bit shy and shell shocked, but after just a couple of days together, she was already relaxing and even rolled on her back for a belly rub. Florian is about 1 year old. .

TO apply to adopt Florian in New York, contact @AnimalHaven: email dogsandcats@ah-nyc.org or call 212-274-8511. Animal Haven is located at 200 Centre Street in Manhattan. Don’t wait! Florian is going to go fast!! Ps: there are 2 other chihuahuas who were rescued with Florian, coming to AH in September. Keep an eye out!

ADOPTION PUPDATE! Totopo found his home! I got a long update from his dad Scott! Totopo was originally rescued in Mexico by @rivierarescue, in horrific shape (last 2 slides are a bit graphic). Last December, he traveled to @animalhaven. Scott wrote: “Dana had been following Animal Haven, and was among the thousands horrified when the awful picture of the furless, emaciated Totopo on the too-short chain in all that garbage and debris appeared. She showed it to me, but I wasn't sure we'd be up to the task for him. Right after Christmas, she announced she was going to see him with or without me... We met Totopo that day, and of course, she fell even more in love with him. I liked him too, but wasn't convinced. He was so distracted that he paid very little attention to us. Dana's campaigning to get him became incessant. I met Totopo again, and still wasn’t convinced. But on Valentine's Day, and told Dana my gift to her was I'd go all-in on adopting Totopo.” By the time the couple applied, Totopo had been adopted. They were disappointed until Scott happened on Animal Haven’s website weeks later, and discovered that Totopo was back! His adoption had only lasted 3 days... Scott and Dana applied immediately, and once approved, brought Totopo home (follow @danad922).
. “Now, as I expected, he's far from perfect and not without issues. He's essentially a 2 year old puppy with PTSD, and a severe case of Doggy ADD. He's largely not housebroken. Worst of all, he has EXTREME anxiety when it comes to other dogs. Once we realized it was fear-based, we took measures and he’s made progress since. Totopo finally found his real home. With a super-comfy bed, a steady supply of hypoallergenic treats that smell and taste awesome (I should know - I've tried them!), furniture he's welcome to climb onto - and arms to hold him, and bodies to snuggle against - any time he wants, a huge pile of bones to chew on and toys to play with... which he does occasionally, but it seems he much prefers napping, or playing with and kissing his new mommy and daddy. And boy, has he become attached to his new daddy... and daddy to his new buddy!”

Ever since I posted about my project in South Korea (see previous posts), I have lost followers. It could be a coincidence, but it got me thinking about your expectations on my page. .

I realize that many of you enjoy the lighthearted content, even when it addresses harsher realities. I know my page is a way to shield ourselves from disturbing images offered on other accounts, while still getting information and calls to action. And it’s no surprise really, since my work is known for pretty pit bulls in flower crowns that often mask the horror behind them: cropped ears, abuse, neglect… .

I realize also that I haven’t yet actually explained the work I will be doing with the Korean dogs. Partly because I am scared. The whole idea behind my involvement with HSI is a project similar to Flower Power actually. We were discussing how I could create beautiful portrait of dog meat survivors, in order to rebrand these dogs in South Korea itself. As you can imagine, many in South Korea view these dogs as inferior, soulless and not companionable. The adoption rates are consequently quite low. With the number of farms HSI hopes to close in the coming years, it is paramount we find more adopters locally. Rebranding these dogs locally is one tool we can use. .

This trip to the dog farm was a first step, simply because when HSI invited me to work with them, I knew I couldn’t do these dogs justice if I didn’t go on the field myself. I didn’t want secondhand accounts. .

I wanted to witness these dogs’ past, so I could better serve their future. .

All that to say that I fully intend on my page staying relatively the same. I will share no slaughter images or anything like that. I do want to continue addressing difficult subjects, educate and offer calls for actions. But I am concerned about protecting you too. So please, stick around (or come back!) and let’s have conversations around all of these things. .

Much love!
Sophie .

PS: this is a Korean dog I photographed during my first shelter shoot, many years ago. Probably the first time I met one of them.

I’m back from South Korea with lots of work to do. Read my previous post if you missed the info. I just spent a couple of days on a dog meat farm. .
.
Going through everything, processing... I’ll start posting in a couple of weeks probably. I’m also putting up an exhibit this weekend and next week (@4heads_nyc on Governors Island in NYC). I’m so behind everything...
In the meantime, check my story if you’d like to ask a question about my trip or the meat trade. I’ll try and answer a few, or I will address them when I start posting. Also reminder: you can become a Patreon if you want access to more content and support that kind of projects (Patreon.com/sophiegamand). Thank you for your support and patience as I process all this. And visit @hsiglobal for ways to support the fight against the meat trade and the rescue of all these doggies.

I am heading to South Korea with Humane Society International (@hsiglobal) . This weekend, I will visit a dog farm with them, where dogs are bred and confined in horrific conditions, to be killed for human consumption. This is something I have wanted to do for a long time, and I am grateful for HSI’s invitation to join their efforts to end the meat trade. .

This trip is the first step of a long-term project I will be working on for the next months (years?). This is a crucial time in the fight against the dog meat trade. There is a decline in dog meat consumption in South Korea, but they still produce about 2.5 million dogs each year. HSI has been working tirelessly toward the end of the trade, helping farms transition into humane businesses instead. .

This is going to be a rough one, guys. I will take comfort in knowing that the dogs I am about to meet are the lucky ones. They will be rescued in a few weeks, as their farmer has agreed to surrender them and transition. Still, standing on that ground, seeing the doggies, it will be rough. .

This is part of the commitment I made. I am a witness and a messenger. And with your support, I will continue this work for as long as I can. .
.

The photos posted here are all © HSI. I am not sure who the photographer is.

Update! Ok you guys are AMAZING!!! Before the weekend, I posted a call for action for my friends at @fultonanimalservices in Atlanta. They had just welcomed 934 animals last month, and are always bursting at the seams! This adorable/heartbreaking pit bull pile and the creepy/cute twins (come play with us ) broke the internet, and the shelter has reported an increase in foster applications (and adoption apps)!! This weekend, 11 dogs already went into foster care (as opposed to just 1 the previous weekend) - and a bunch of cats too. It might not sound like a lot, but it’s actually huge because hopefully, these new foster homes will become repeat fosters, and spread the word, helping make a big difference for the shelter in the longer term. More apps are being processed.
.
Keep tagging friends! The 2 last pics are from my visit back in 2016. So as you can see, the shelter struggles with overpopulation all the time. They need all the help they can get! .
If you are in Atlanta and can foster for 2 days, 2 weeks or 2 months, sign up at LifeLineAnimal.org/foster. .

5 years ago, I shared the first portrait of a little series called Pit Bull Flower Power! The project was meant to be a quick summer project: 5, 6 portraits of pit bulls in flower crowns, and move on with my life... but from the first day, it became clear PBFP was my new normal. .

Today, I have about 450 portraits in the series (here is a random selection!), some of which have literally saved the life of the model. I have hand built about 700-800 crowns, all unique. I have visited tens of shelters and worked with many rescues (always free of charge). I have traveled to about 15 states for the series. .

I have learned so much about pit bulls, myself, art, and everything in between. I owe all of this to you all, people who have loved and cheered the series, and supported my work over the years, by just sharing it or buying some merchandise. I have to pinch myself everyday, that I am so lucky to do the work I want, the way I want to, to be free to use my voice and try and make a difference in the world. It is a privilege. Thank you! .

Since the coffee table book came out last October, I’ve been excited to work on a few different projects. A little break from PBFP to keep things exciting, and moving forward. Stay tuned! Please consider joining my Patreon to get the latest news and support my ongoing work with rescues. (Patreon.com/SophieGamand). .

NEW YORK: Rani has been waiting at @AnimalHaven for months! She came all the way from India. She was hit by a car as a puppy and did not receive the immediate treatment she needed to recover full use of her hind legs. Although she has limited mobility in her hind legs, she is very sweet and seems to get around pretty well despite her condition. She has begun water therapy and rehabilitation, and has already regained much of the use of her back legs! She's still a little wobbly, but Rani has made amazing progress and is able to get around on her own. Please contact Animal Haven for more info!

It’s August 1st! Time to switch to a new page in my #PitBullFlowerPower calendar… The adult version features @Majorthepittie and his soulful, mushy face. Major sadly passed away unexpectedly a couple of weeks ago. I was in touch with his adopter over the years, and I know how much he was adored by his family. The news really broke my heart. Major had waited two years at the @brookhaven_animalshelter, before being pulled by the New Rochelle Humane Society, where Samantha and her family found him. He was a smart cookie, learning all his tricks pretty fast, and loved his people. His new neighbors were terrified of him at first, and he quickly won them over, changing mentalities about pit bulls wherever he went. Major, you were a good, good boy and we love you!

Hotdog catchers from my archives! (requested by @hsully54). All adopted except Samantha (on beige background, slide 4), who is still waiting at @halliehillanimalsanctuary. Samantha is very intelligent, loves to fetch balls and is a great swimmer. She is great indoors and loves to sleep in a bed. She would like to be in a home without any small children or other pets.
.
.
Side note: I hate buying hotdogs. It’s one of the grossest things that come with my job, especially when they are like $1 for 20 or something... “meat” shouldn’t be so cheap! If it is, there is something wrong somewhere... either with the way animals are slaughtered and processed, or the kind of crap they put in the product. I only buy them for the shelter doggies because it makes them sooooo happy and it helps them relax when they are worried! But it’s a real moral issue for me. .

ANNISTON, AL: Senior Olive from the @calhouncountyhumane is a hoot and a half! She is definitely the old lady who just does not care about others' opinions. She is happy and will smile with her mouth of partial teeth, go after tossed treats with gusto, and get all the slobber on you she feels like sharing. If Olive had a cane, she would wave it at you to get what she deserves! Olive LOVES attention and being treated like the special lady she is. She's been at the shelter for 5-6 years so she needs a little help with new things. She has gone to class to work on basic manners. Olive does not like other dogs sharing her glory. She must be the only pupper in her retirement palace. If you adopt her, you will receive two free training sessions at the Encore Enrichment Center, to help you transition Olive. The shelter has been including more enrichment and socialization in their dogs’ routine, so it’s possible Olive’s dog status has changed. Please inquire if she caught your heart!

For more info, head to http://calhouncountyhs.blogspot.com or email calhouncountyhumane@gmail.com. The shelter is located in Anniston, but they consider applications from out of state (East side of Alabama only) and Canada.

AMAZING ADOPTION PUPDATE!! Remember Lady Red who waited 6 years at the @calhouncountyhumane shelter?? She found a home! When I met her back in 2016, Lady Red had been labeled as dog aggressive, which really stood in the way of adoption. Year after year, Lady Red waited, and her face grew whiter. A few weeks back, @susiesseniordogs and I decided to do another big push for her, especially since now Lady Red wasn’t considered dog aggressive anymore. In fact, she’d proven playful with mellow dogs during the shelter’s new enrichment program. Our posts caught the attention of many, but it was Laura who couldn’t resist! .
.
“There was something about her sweet face that just grabbed my attention, Laura wrote. I shared her story on Facebook and said: “If no one adopts her I’m going to have to!” I couldn’t stop thinking about her. I knew I had to have to her and emailed the shelter and sent an application. I saw how many times the post was shared and commented on and I figured there was no way I’d be lucky enough to get her but sure enough, it worked out!” .
.
The shelter staff drove Lady Red to her new home, and after a successful meet and greet, the deal was sealed. Since then, Lady Red has settled in her new home, where she is adored, especially by her new brother Dooby, a 2-year-old rescue, who is all about Lady Red. .
.
“Gradually she has started playing with Dooby more and more and they love to wrestle and roll around in the yard. And on my bed! Her favorite place to be is right by side wherever I am. She loves everyone she meets and is so gentle with kids. My 3-year-old niece can even walk her! She’s the sweetest and most gentle dog I’ve ever had and she fits in perfectly here. The ottoman is her favorite place to lay and chew on her bones that she gets every day. I love her so much and she’s been the perfect addition to our pack.” .
.
After 6 years, Lady Red is finally home. So many dogs like her need a chance So many are mislabeled too, because it’s very hard to predict some dogs’ behavior outside the stressful shelter. .
.
And now I’ll BRB, someone is chopping onions over here…! 🥰 .

ADOPTION/FOSPICE PUPDATE! I photographed Freckles in November 2018. She’d been diagnosed with terminal cancer, and @AnimalHaven was hoping to find a Fospice for her. Allison (@apnavis) was that hero Freckles needed! 🤗 She wrote me this sweet update: .
.
“I've been fostering for years but mostly puppies and younger adult dogs. I became interested in fospice but never found an opportunity. I came across your photo of Freckles and the second I saw it, something about her eyes just grabbed me. As soon as I saw she was in NYC and a fospice case, I left work early and went straight to Animal Haven. She was a little bundle of energy when I met her (not what I was expecting for a dog with terminal cancer), and despite her running around with excitement, she came and sat on my lap and I immediately knew I had to take her. She came home with me shortly afterwards and that was 7 months ago. You would never know she has cancer, she has puppy energy and is always happy. It's hard knowing that my time with her is limited, but I also cherish every day all the more because of it. I'm happy knowing that I can give her the best time during her final months, filled with hikes, treats and cuddles. There's very little sadness in having her, but a lot of love.
I know fospice isn't for everyone but I definitely recommend it and would do it again in a heartbeat.” .
.
.
Fospice is one of the most selfless, beautiful things someone can do for a shelter animal! The word Fospice stands for Foster/Hospice. It’s when a shelter animal needs end-of-life care because of their advanced age and/or health status. It used to be that animals who were terminally ill would most likely die at the shelter. But now, thanks to Fospice programs, foster families can welcome those animals and provide them with the love, comfort and care they need. The difference with an official adoption, is that the rescue/shelter will usually cover the medical expenses since they are still responsible for the animal. If you are interested in becoming a Fospice parent, check with your local shelter to see if they offer that program! (and in NYC, check @fosterdogs). #fospice #shelterdog #pawitforward

Out of office.

It’s been nice taking a break from life, New York, and all the existential angst I put myself through all the time I am starting to feel the excitement of coming back home with a renewed energy and appetite. If you are vacationing with family, remember to take breaks from everyone and allow yourself to be alone with your own thoughts for a while. It’s not always easy to hang out with family and all the baggage that comes with. And keeping one’s sense of agency is paramount for a relaxing and fulfilling experience. We all need breaks from the world. (for those of you who haven’t followed my recent stories, I’m in Sweden 🇸🇪, my hubby’s childhood place).

ADOPTION PUPDATE: Zoey was rescued with her mom and siblings in Albama, and traveled to New York at @AnimalHaven as a puppy. She was swiftly adopted by a family, where she became the best friend, and biggest responsablity, of the 12-year-old daughter, Natalia. Natalia herself wrote this beautiful testimonial: “This is Willow and she is my incredibly beautiful little puppy. She is now 3 months old and she is massive. She basically has the same size paws as other full-grown dogs. It was definitely a hard/easy process adopting her. We had a lot of help from amazing people.
The day we brought her home was spectacular. However, I don’t think she thought that it was spectacular. She was so nervous, but the next day she got the hang of things. The first thing we did when she came in the house was give her a bath. She was so funny and did not love the water. We thought we were the first people to give her a bath. We later learned it was Kevin Heart not us. My dog is so much more famous then I am. I love to share this story.
One of my many jobs as an owner of a dog is to walk her. I always get so many nice compliments about her unique spots. My dad told me to tell people ”she is half Pit Bull and half Leopard.” Even though she has some Pit in her, she is so sweet and friendly. People should not be scared of her because she has a breed that is tougher then other breeds. Willow is the best thing that ever happened to my family. She has thought us how to be responsible pet owners. My family likes to spoil and cuddle with her. She loves to roll over and give us her belly to rub. She sleeps a ton on her back and snores super loud. She is just adorable and perfect for our family. Thank you Willow for being the best puppy ever!”

NEW YORK: look who is still waiting for a home?! 🥰 Valentina was rescued in Mexico on Valentine’s Day. She was hiding under a car, very shy, but as soon as rescuers offered her some food, she came out and they realized she couldn’t use her back legs very well. She struggles to stand up and walk. X-rays showed that Valentina had a broken hip that had healed improperly. Because she never received the medical help she needed, her back legs are stiff and she is semi-paralyzed - swipe for a video. She traveled to New York and is now in the care of @AnimalHaven where she is waiting for a set of wheels! Valentina shares her room with another dog. She is a bit shy at first, but good with other dogs and very mild-mannered. She is a sweetheart! She loves her blanket. If you bring her one, she will grab it gently and make herself comfortable with it. I guess she’s learned some tricks while surviving on the streets! Valentine is about 3 years old and medium sized.

ADOPTION PUPDATE! I photographed Honey in LA a few weeks back at the @annenbergpetspace. She was recovering from surgery on both knees. My post caught the eyes of Megan and Jay (@megerig and @jaygerig), and they headed to the PetSpace to meet Honey immediately. .
.
“I cannot thank you enough for your work; it helped us bring Honey home.
A dog-shaped hole started opening in our life, but we tried to hem in that desire with all of the things that needed to happen first in order for it to be “right”. It turns out all we truly needed was the right dog.
As always, your photograph caught my eye. This time, however, it was closely followed by “LOS ANGELES” at the start of the post. So many of the sweet, adoptable faces I see are across the country—this one was here. I read about her two knee surgeries and watched the videos about her recovery process. I have had surgery on both of my knees, and I felt an immediate kinship. I knew this was our dog.
When we went to meet her, she was at the counter on greeting duty. The person asked what brought us there; we pointed to Honey. We spent the afternoon with her, and she came home with us.
She has been with us just over two weeks. She captures human hearts wherever she goes, and she has started making peace with our cats and friends with the dog next door. Honey loves the sunshine and moving her bed around the house to where she wants it. Actually, it’s the cats’ bed, who do not care about it. Honey claimed it for herself within minutes of being in our place. We’re going to get her a bigger one at some point, but for now it’s all hers and she loves it.
She had her post-op today. The surgeon enthusiastically expressed that Honey is well on her way to a full recovery.
We are grateful for the lessons she teaches us daily about getting outside and enjoying life.
Megan and Jay” . .

NEW YORK: Ben from @animalhaven makes everyone swoon! This 2-year-old heartthrob is super playful, with a happy-go-lucky personality. Ben loves nothing more than bouncing around a room, throwing his toys in the air and reminding us that joy is contagious. Ben is a pocket pit, meaning he is medium sized and perfect for the NYC life! He does love to get active and explore around the city. That said, he'll also be content with a house in the 'burbs or some digs near a hiking trail. Ben is recommended for an adult-only household, and no cats. He can be selective with dogs, but that’s always a tough thing to evaluate properly at the shelter.
If you would like a playmate, an active companion who’d be the perfect wingman to get all the ladies, or boys, or nonbinary gender!! , please consider meeting Ben at @Animalhaven (200 Centre Street, NYC). For more info, visit: www.animalhavenshelter.org, email dogsandcats@ah-nyc.org or call 212-274-8511.

ANNISTON, ALABAMA: Lady Red has been waiting for a home for 6 years at the @calhouncountyhumane! My friend @susiesseniordogs and I are going to push one more time for this deserving pup, but we cannot make miracles happen if you guys don’t do your share. Please, tag a friend, share, and consider adding Lady Red to your family!

Quiet and somewhat shy in her kennel, she is all cuteness and smiles once outside, and a total love sponge! She comes up for sweet-talk and gentle pets, loves belly rubs and walks, and asks for little else in this world. After a good yard investigation, or after she’s smelled the roses on her mellow walks, she loves climbing on her person’s lap and is content staying with you, snuggling and getting all the kisses. After 6 years at the shelter, Lady Red is low maintenance and appreciates any special attention she gets from her person.
Now that she is getting more enrichment at the shelter, and maybe because she is now 8 years old, Lady Red has gone from being reactive in her kennel, to being super mellow and ignoring doggies, even when walking past the kennels of reactive dogs. She has ignored cats too. She has just gotten a vet check-up and passed with flying colors!
To adopt Lady Red, please email calhouncountyhumane@gmail.com to apply! Out-of-state adopters (east of #Mississippi) considered.

@calhouncountyhumane is located at 1201 Parkwood Drive #Anniston, #AL.

I have a game for us! I've always been a bit sad that thousands of portraits I have taken in various shelters, often have a short shelf-life. My computer is full of faces I met, sometimes never even had a chance to share! Doggies whose paths I crossed, while they were at a very important crossroad in their lives. So I want to showcase some of those and honor them, every once in a while. And I thought it could be fun if you guys sent me some challenges (and help me narrow it down! ), such as: A black dog whose name starts with an S. A white and black dog with one ear up, one ear down. So send me some challenges!!!

ADOPTION PUPDATE: Delilah was rescued in Puerto Rico right after Hurricane Maria in September 2017, and flew to New York shortly after. She waited over a year at @animalhaven before finally finding a home with one of their volunteers. People are so beautiful and amazing! 🥰! Her mom Sarah (@cookie_scalise) wrote this lovely adoption story: .
“I’ve been a volunteer at @Animalhaven since last August and since the first time I saw Delilah—at orientation—she immediately stood out as special. I have always ended each volunteer shift by sitting and snuggling with her. But my boyfriend and I didn’t think it was the right time for a dog of our own. .

Fast-forward to the beginning of puppy season this year and Mantat from AH sent out the call to volunteers for fosters of longer-term residents. We jumped at bringing Delilah into our home to provide her a reprieve from the shelter. Over the month we had Delilah we absolutely fell in love with her sweet spirit. She’s the most serene, smushy, loving girl who spends most of her time snoozing or watching TV with us. Her other favorite pastime is trotting around the neighborhood and stopping into her local shops for treats. .

We had to return her for a few weeks as we’d promised to dog sit for a friend but decided that if Delilah was still there when our friends dog went home we’d adopt her and it’d be meant to be. Something had just clicked and she was already a part of our “pack”. She’s enjoys each day immensely and we feel so lucky that the universe sent her our way.

Both Delilah and my last dog were very long-term shelter residents and both turned out to be the most incredible beings.

Anyway, Animal Haven is lucky to have you as a photographer and we’re luck to have Animal Haven and Delilah.”

NEW YORK: Bruno is a Puerto Rican rescue who has been waiting at @animalhaven in New York for a while now. Despite his white face, he is only 6 years old! Sadly he needs to be an only pet at home, but he is so fantastic with people, you’ll only want him anyway! Bruno is a lover. He loves to give hugs, to receive belly rubs, and will flop over to make sure you know it’s belly rubs time! Bruno is a toy destroyer; he has so much fun with them! He is super food motivated, and knows his basic obedience. He might be all grown up, but he is still very puppyish. 🥰

ADOPTION PUPDATE: Eliza is one of the puppies who came with mom Addison from Alabama to NYC (@AnimalHaven). She was adopted almost immediately, and has been settling nicely with her new family! Her mom Catherine emailed me an update: . “I decided to adopt Eliza because I have two younger brothers who have always wanted a dog but my mother was unable to take on the financial responsibility to own a pet. My brothers are teenagers now, growing into young men in a single parent household, and I wanted to give them an opportunity to learn responsibility and what it means to care for someone/something other than themselves. .

Since adoption, we have renamed Eliza Raven. My younger brothers and I have been very involved in her care and love her very much. When my brothers show me a new trick they taught Raven and tell me about positive training techniques they've learned on YouTube, I can see the excitement and difference in their persona since adoption. They go outside more often to take her out for walks instead of staying at home on the Internet. They wake up early on their own accord on school days now to play with her before they go to school. .

Raven is so sweet and never barks at anyone. She has so much energy and keeps everyone busy! Even though she gets distracted, she is a quick learner. She knows her name, how to sit, and jump if we ask her to! Overall, I feel like a proud parent not only to Raven but of my younger brothers as well.” .

LOS ANGELES: When Ballerina arrived at the @annenbergpetspace, she was battling a bad case of pneumonia, and the team nursed her back to health. Since, she’s enjoyed a full spa treatment there, including a much-needed dental! And she’s clearly hit the gym too 🤪🤣 Ballerina is now ready to find a home. At 10 years old, 12lbs, Ballerina loves training, is super food motivated and attentive. She is so good with dogs and people (even kids, as long as you move slow with her), that she is both in the doggie and the people “welcome committee”, welcoming new doggies when they arrive from the stressful city shelter, and welcoming guests at the PetSpace’s front desk. She has a doggie roommate at the PetSpace (Baxter) and is doing great. Ballerina loves exploring and sniffing around the yard. She also does this cute thing where she burrows herself in blankets in her room, and guests have a fun time playing “find Ballerina”! For more info about Ballerina, email adoptions@annenbergpetspace.org or visit www.annenbergpetspace.org. Or consider heading to the PetSpace directly and ask for Ballerina! It’s an awesome place to learn tons about dogs and cats, behavior, training, medical, rehabilitation, hang out with kittens and play fun games with the kids.

NEW YORK: New #PitBullFlowerPower! And it’s my first merle pit bull of the series! Addison is gorgeous, although she was a bit shy during our shoot – I don’t mind her demure expression though! She is currently available at @animalhaven. When I photographed her, she had just arrived in NYC from Alabama where she and her 3 puppies (Eliza, Zed and Zoey) were rescued from an animal control facility. At the animal control facility, staff had suggested that they would keep Addison while the puppies needed nursing, then would probably euthanize her and put the puppies up for adoption once they wouldn’t need Addison anymore. Sadly, in places where animal control has an emphasis on CONTROL (as in: controlling the population), moms are often used for nursing then discarded, because they are harder to place than puppies. Thankfully for Addison, a local no-kill shelter pulled her and later the little family traveled to New York for a better chance at adoption. Since they’ve arrived at Animal Haven in NYC, the 3 puppies have flown off the shelves, as you can imagine, and Addison is now waiting for her turn at a loving family.
Addison is a medium-sized pup, about 2 years old. She lives to please and loves her people! In AL, she lived in foster care with 5 other dogs with no problems (she had her own area with her puppies), but it might have been the maternity hormones helping, or maybe now that she is a New Yorker, she is turning it on, but today she is recommended as an only pet at home. She's an energetic girl that responds quickly to commands and would do best in a somewhat active household.
For more info, visit: www.animalhavenshelter.org, email dogsandcats@ah-nyc.org or call 212-274-8511. Animal Haven is located at 200 Centre Street in Manhattan. .

NEW YORK: Junior was found in Alabama in 2016. There, he spent almost 3 years waiting for that perfect person, until he was chosen as a lucky traveler to @AnimalHaven in New York! He’s been settling since. Junior was good with other dogs in AL, but in New York he’s been unsure and will look at his person for reassurance when he sees one. It is such a big change from home! New place, new scents (especially in the busy streets!)… I am hoping he can jump right into a home and settle at last, for good! Junior is an incredibly affectionate boy, as you can see from the video, as soon as he entered the room for our shoot, he went straight to my lap and rolled himself into my arms. He gives the best hugs! He loves everyone he meets, and has this huge endearing smile (he photographed more serious than he really is!). The photo on teal, I captured 3 years ago in AL. So we met again and this time I hope his family is around the corner! This handsome boy loves to sniff around on walks but he's still getting used to the strange sounds of the city. He is estimated to be 5 years.

He needs an experienced owner who wants to continue his training and perhaps even enter him in the world of competition. ️️NEW YORK CONSTITUENTS! (beware of graphic video if you swipe - read the caption for more info). Several cities have now banned the sale of pets in stores, but somehow, NYC is behind on this 🤢! .

The majority of puppies, kittens and rabbits sold in pet stores come from mills: intensive breeding facilities where there is little concern for the health and wellbeing of the animals. Families who purchase those animals are often burdened with pet health problems that can cost thousands of dollars in vet visits or lead to a lifetime of medical complications. Buyers are often lied to and guilt-tripped into buying (sick) animals. Not to mention the way these pets are sometimes treated, as shown by this (graphic) video, captured in 2017 during an undercover operation by the @humanesociety in an NYC pet store. The store was since closed, and the former owner is facing a lawsuit from the city Dept of Consumer Affairs. .

All of this could change now!! And we need YOUR voice! NYS bill S.4234/A.6298, recently introduced, will restrict the retail sale of dogs, cats and rabbits in pet stores. It will only allow for adoption of animals who belong to registered animal welfare nonprofits.

The first step in the legislative process is a review/approval by the Domestic Animal Welfare Committee before moving on to a vote by the State Assembly and State Senate and ultimately Governor Cuomo. Senator Monica Martinez (who is big on rescue) is the chair of that Committee. The idea is to get 3-6 calls to her office every day from New York State constituents requesting that she support the bill. Her Hauppauge office # is: 631-360-3356. The Humane Society has created an online form with more info and example on what to say + a form to send a written message as well. .

NY Constituents, THIS is the time to get involved! Find the Humane Society link via my FB post, my story, via SophieGamand.com/blog, or use this Bitly version: https://bit.ly/2JSpgaL. .

AUSTIN, TEXAS: I photographed Monty back in 2016 at @austinpetsalive, and he is still waiting for that special someone… You can follow his adventure and pouty face at @adopt_montythepit! Monty is a wiggly and playful boy who loves toys and the great outdoors. Although he isn’t good with dogs or cats, and isn’t recommended for children, Monty has so much to offer his person! He was still a young dog when I met him, but since he’s grown into an obedient, wonderful companion. He is now about 4 years old. .

Monty is athletic and very sweet natured. He enjoys hikes and running. He goes on trails on a regular basis with his friends from the shelter, and runs side-by-side with his person for miles. He isn’t distracted by bikers, strollers or even other dogs and cranky swans! He truly is a fantastic running/hiking partner. He also goes on sleepovers with volunteers and does fantastic. A respectful houseguest, he is also an excellent snoozer and is content to lounge on the couch and keep you company for hours during Netflix marathons. .

In addition to being a top-notch lounger and trail companion, Monty is also in the Total Obedience Program (a program modeled after the AKC's Canine Good Citizen test). As a TOP dog, Monty has a personalized training plan and works with a volunteer trainer several times a week to help him learn and maintain skills! He has mastered his training plan (sit, down, walking nicely on a leash, sitting calmly when approached by strangers, calmly walking past another dog, staying in a sit or down until told free, and coming when called). If you adopt him, you will get training support from the shelter’s staff. .

Orange pic is mine, everything else is from the amazing @adopt_montythepit account. If you are interested in adopting this sweetie, please email adopt@austinpetsalive.org or visit www.austinpetsalive.org. Monty’s ID is APA-A-40017.

ADOPTION PUPDATE! I photographed Jessica (@nycscr) in 2015. She’d been pulled from the city shelter after being dropped there at 6 months old back in 2013, covered in horrible mange, looking like “a plucked chicken” (swipe for pic). It took 4 years for her to find a home. .

In June 2017, Sheri and Gabe’s dog Kylee died unexpectedly. The family was devastated but two months later, they saw a @thedodo story about Jessica. Sheri wrote (@sherimeshalauthor) “I was struck by how similar her challenges were to Kylee's, namely dog aggression. Here was another dog that would thrive if she was just given the love she deserved and could be the only baby. I commented on the post that I'd take her in a heartbeat, if we weren't in Chicago. Jessica's foster mom happened to see that comment out of hundreds of others and we started messaging. .
.
“Soon we arranged a trip to NY to visit Jessica. It seemed kind of crazy. Who goes to NY to adopt a shelter dog when there are thousands of great dogs in Chicago desperate for homes? We got some grief over that, but had to follow our hearts. .
.
“We spent a weekend with Jessica and fell head over heels for her. I cried when we had to leave her. I didn't expect to become attached so quickly. .
.
“Signs that she was meant to be ours seemed to pop up in our neighborhood. In the window of an art gallery, the cartoon of a dog who looked just like her; a store called Jessica's that we'd never noticed before. We started seeing her name everywhere.” .

After a home visit, the adoption went through and the family drove to pick Jessica up. “I felt bad for taking Jessica away from the best mom she'd ever had. Cassie would take her own dog to her parents' just so she could foster Jessica on the weekends! That's some serious love and dedication.” .
.
“Jessica has been the light of our lives since the drive home. She is so sweet, fun, affectionate, hilarious and adorable. She makes us laugh all the time. We make all her food and she sleeps between us - spoiled, spoiled, spoiled. But I feel the first four years of her life were so incredibly hard, she deserves the best life we can give her.”
