Is anyone else just sick and tired of all the BS and fake behavior on Instagram? I don’t get it. How is it mentally good for anyone to see and consume that stuff OR try and emulate it? No wonder everyone is full of bitterness, stress and anxiety, me included ‍️ I notice the more time I spend exploring on Instagram, the worse it can be for me if I’m not mentally strong “UGH Liz why aren’t your legs longer and why don’t you have a thigh gap and why didn’t you get a better shot at this place?” Oh that’s right, you are short and love burgers and are anxious AF 🤔 remember, comparison is the thief of joy. Stop comparing yourself to people on the internet, we’re all stars and doing our best So next time you’re scrolling through social media and feel those dark thoughts start creeping in, please remember you aren’t alone; we’re all in this together. And I don’t know about you guys, but I’m dying to see more heart on Instagram, I’m CRAVING some damn good stories and authentic pages to follow. Do you guys have any recommendations of creative people who fit the ticket? Who are you really enjoying following on Instagram right now? Tag em and I’ll start resharing @thetravelbootcamp #thetravelbootcamp #moreburgerslessproblems

As the world becomes more crowded and holiday spots become more popular, it’s getting harder and harder to find little corners of the world that haven’t been overrun with tourism and still manage to maintain their unique character. Would you believe me if I told you there are still places in Europe like this? The @heartofthedolomites defies all logic of being the most perfect string of authentic mountain villages without the chaos of touristy mountain towns. Little to no English is spoken here, siestas business hours are encouraged and the only other tourists your likely to find is Italians (and maybe a German every now and then). If you’re looking for the real deal, this is the place for you @adventure.venture #heartofdolomites #dolomites #agordino

Saying hello and admiring the beautiful pou whenua installations up at my beloved @cardronanz Pou whenua are carved wooden pillars that tell a story here in New Zealand. They are significant to the Māori people, representing their contributions to the cultural heritage and acknowledge the association between the people (tāngata) and the land (whenua). Pou reflect the relationship between the ancestors, environment, and the reputation or standing of the tangata whenua, and it’s so special Cardrona now has 5 pou reflecting their core values. My favorite is the “Fun is Good” pou - which is all about living above the line, being fun and creative, and knowing this comes from within and radiates out (the spirals) - a beautiful way to honor the people and the land here in one of my favorite spots ️ #Cardronanz #cardrona #pouwhenua #cardronalovesyou

Just me and my favorite coconuts @georgiarickard and @laurenepbath 🥥 hanging out in Bali ️ together we run the @thetravelbootcamp - where we provide the tools, resources, understanding and hope to guide people to a more purposeful life running a business with two other women who are equally as stubborn and independent as I am has not been easy but it’s been so incredibly rewarding. I thank my lucky stars every day that I have these two heroes by my side. We are all polar opposites but are perfectly united in our beliefs about creativity and building the life of our dreams, something we have to remind ourselves of constantly as we argue from what to order from Uber Eats to where we shape and grow our company. I’ve worked for myself for so long and I’m fiercely solitary and independent, but learning to work in a team has been one of the richest experiences of my life! And we couldn’t have done it without the wise guidance from our coach @therichcoach who had taught us so much about making our dreams a reality and how to work together to make it happen! #thetravelbootcamp #strongandstubborn #girlpower #fierceandflowery

Happy World Elephant Day I've been lucky enough to spend time with elephants on safaris around Africa and Asia over the past decade, and seeing these incredible creatures in the wild is a profound and incredible experience. Observing them interact in their families and even watching their eyes as they see us, you can see their souls, feel their intelligence, and can't help but want to do everything you can to protect them

So please, if you are traveling in a place where there are any kind of elephant activities, from rescue sanctuaries where you get to play with them to even riding them, please don't. The process of breaking an elephant to be controlled by a human is gut-wrenchingly horrible

And a massive thank you to incredible groups like @intrepidtravel for taking a stance by banning elephant rides on their adventures years ago and inspiring tourism to change and be more ethically minded with wildlife experiences. #bekind #stopelephantrides #worldelephantday

Our team member @adventure.venture has been hanging out in Italy this summer and is loving it ⭐️ Wow, you guys. I didn’t know if there was a mountain range in the world that would rival our beloved Southern Alps in New Zealand but spending three weeks in the Dolomites has me second guessing everything. The unique light grey color of the thousand meter rock walls is one thing but pair that with picturesque Italian villages and practically no tourists at all? I think I’m sold. This isn’t the Dolomites you know from your Instagram feed. This quiet area of the @heartofthedolomites in the Medio Alto Agordino is the real deal. Have you been? ️ #heartofdolomites #agordino #dolomites

Sometimes I think I love and hate creativity in equal measure. When inspiration hits, it’s the most intoxicating drug on earth, nothing gets in my way, and I proceed with making things at a frantic pace, and riding the wave of creativity as far is it will take me. I live for that feeing But perfect sets and endless swells don’t last forever and calm seas always return and with it a general feeling of #meh #blergh and #ugh can easily take over. That’s where my head has been the past week and a half, somewhere in between Dr. Seuss’ Slump and a Lurch, and like the wise cartoonist once penned, un-slumping yourself is not easily done. So how do I find my way out of this maze in between a Lurch and a Slump? Suggestions are welcome. What are your tips for finding your creative voice again? For looking for those waves of inspiration? Or just to keep moving forward when you need to? Spill please because I’ve got places to go #drseuss #slump #creativityishard @thetravelbootcamp #thetravelbootcamp

Back in my happy place, by the sea in the heart of the Paparoa National Park in New Zealand a temperate rainforest, come wintertime the weather here is often warm and mild, and my days on the west coast were marked by blue skies and pastel soft sunsets. I often come here to sit back and reflect, do some creative writing and allow myself the space for deep contemplation. If I don’t build in time in my schedule to sit back and give myself the space to breathe and dream, I likely won’t do it. Final day for reduced tickets to our next @thetravelbootcamp in Queenstown in October perhaps it’s the romantic nostalgic in me, but I often think about what my life would be like now if I hadn’t taken a huge risk to leave my comfortable life behind and pursue a career in travel blogging - I mean, honestly, who does that? Can you blame my parents for freaking the fuck out? sorry mom! As I sat perched on these rocks last week watching the most magnificent sunset, I thought about all of the sunsets I’ve witnessed in some of the most spectacular spots around the world. My blog has taken me to dozens of countries and has offered endless creative opportunities, but in many ways, boiled down to it, I’m most grateful for these sunsets. Simple, poignant moments that remind me I’m on the path of my dreams, that I made the right choice. I reflected back on the path I walked away from, those other sunsets I have missed, content in my choice and steadfast in my resolve to keep walking towards my goals. I can’t wait to share more stories from how I to where I am today and give you the lessons and tools you can use to make sure the path you choose pays off too #thetravelbootcamp #wildandfree @thetravelbootcamp

I began blogging full-time back in 2013, long before getting paid to travel was really a thing. While it seems like a lifetime ago now, it took many years of hard lessons, setbacks and failures for me to grow and step into my current role. For years my time and my work didn't seem valuable to me, and I happily accepted cheaply paid writing gigs and free trips, stoked that I was living on my own terms with creative freedom. I nodded when people told me I was lucky and didn't think twice about working towards a real income; I was just so grateful for what I had
.
But instead of living like a queen in Bali, I chose to settle in New Zealand, the land of $7 avocados and $100 tanks of fuel; free trips didn't pay the bills and the time it took from me kept me from pursuing other paid work I scraped by making ends meet, living on 2 minute spicy thai noodles and juggling bills week to week, believing myself fortunate, and often doing so much more work than I needed to without earning a dollar. I convinced myself that it was good for my brand long-term, and I was building my reputation, changing an industry took time, right?
.
It took getting massively taken advantage of and fucked over by a business I was close to for me to finally wake up and find some goddamn self respect Dear baby Liz, just because the work you do is on the internet and totally new, doesn't mean it's not worth anything. Once the pain and hurt from that mistake began to ease, I completely changed my business. I set rates and fees and began looking at work opportunities through a new lens. No longer were they free gigs I should be grateful for, instead my time was worth something.
.
It was terrifying to set these boundaries but once I did, my life and my income changed forever. Learn how to value yourself, and what I charge these days, and how to set prices for unique work with me in Queenstown at my next @thetravelbootcamp in October. Only two days left of early prices - get em while they’re hot #thetravelbootcamp #exposuredoesntpaybills #nzavocadomafia

People always ask me who takes my photos - well, surprise, it's all me - I don't have an Instagram husband....yet Well, it's mostly me. The majority of my own photos that I share I took myself using a tripod and remote timer while I frolic about looking rather sad. Obviously, I look ridiculous, so I try to do it out of view of other people. TBH it's a constant struggle to do between my inherent laziness (setting up these shots takes forever and there's a high chance I'll break something in the process) and my total introverted-ness which means I would rather die than ask someone to take a photo of me, which would obviously make my life easier. However in the past few years I've started to collaborate with other photographers to help me get the shots too, and it's amazing because I love watching other people work. Why do I even share photos of myself? I don't really care, and it took years for me to become comfortable in front of the camera. But I realized a long time ago that including myself in my articles and posts gave a face to my stories, which is why I still soldier on. So there you go, my industry secrets to the perfect solo female traveler selfie - only 2 days left to get this round of tickets to the @thetravelbootcamp in Queenstown where you'll learn all the ends and outs of making a living on your own terms like me #bloglife #picsoritdidnthappen #thetravelbootcamp

What do you think they’re taking about? 🤔 curious penguin fans want to know! King penguins are the second largest penguins, and 100 years ago they were absolutely demolished on Macquarie Island for the blubber oil trade. They’re finally coming back and we were lucky enough to see vast colonies of them on my voyage to the subantarctic with @heritageexpeditions ️ another fun fact about emperor penguins is that you can’t watch them walk around and not smile. For the longest time I really resisted calling myself a photographer. I’m not sure why, but I felt like I hadn’t “earned” it. Instead I stuck with the familiar title of blogger, writer, or the more generalized “that girl from the internet.” I feel like this is so common, especially with women, we hold ourselves back, whereas I’ve met more men than I can count who don’t even shoot in manual or haven’t even sold an image and they have no problem calling themselves professional photographers 🤷‍️ if only feminine confidence in the workplace wasn’t considered a bad thing; and don’t even get me started on men who’ve belittled me for carrying a pro kit. But before I digress into another feminist tirade, I’d like to acknowledge the work I’ve put into becoming a better photographer over the past decades. I’m always working, always learning, always upskilling and trying to learn new tricks. I’m so lucky in my line of work I’ve been able to connect with some of the most talented and creative photographers in the world, many of whom have taken me under their wing and taught me so much (I’ve tagged a few of them in this image if you’d like some new people to follow). Thank you to all for being so generous with me. Since I picked up my first DSLR about a decade ago, my photography had taken me around the globe and earns me over 6 figures a year. I’ve licensed images to some of the biggest brands in the world and had them featured in publications I could have never imagined. My work had appeared on billboards and I’ve broken so many cameras I can’t even keep track anymore. And I never stop complaining about how heavy my kit is. So what do you guys reckon, am I photographer yet or still that chick from Instagram? @thetravelbootcamp #thetravelbootcamp #girlpower #timesup

Just another influencer in Bali ️ show me the trendy vegan cafes and coconut mylk lattes so many of you on here probably only know me from Instagram, but the reality is I’ve been a writer and a blogger for much longer than just-another-Instagrammer. I started my travel blog, Young Adventuress, almost 10 years ago during my last semester of university while procrastinating on papers. There was an urge inside me to share my stories and travels that I couldn’t contain - they were spilling out of me and I knew, even back then, that they deserved their own home. I had no ambitions or dreams or desires of what I would or could do with those stories; I had zero notions where they could take me one day. All I knew is that I wanted to travel and write. Repeat. So that’s what I did, even when I was supposed to be doing something else and I couldn’t afford it. So I started a blog Passion is everything in this industry, and my passion for blogging sustained me even in my darkest moments, even when I didn’t know what I wanted, even when I didn’t know if I could succeed. A small decision 10 years ago had led me on the greatest journey I could never imagine. My little personal blog grew into a community of tens of millions and has enabled me to build the life of my dreams, to travel and tell stories. It’s taught me more than I ever hoped to learn about myself and carried me to the greatest of opportunities. How lucky am I? @thetravelbootcamp #thetravelbootcamp

How beautiful is the hermitage of San Juan de Gaztelugatxe twinkling in the early morning light of summer? The Basque Coast and northern Spain is full of gems like these, though most lack the absolute pandemonium brought on by being a film set in Game of Thrones (do you recognize it?) Personally I think they should implement a rule of “if you can’t pronounce it, you can’t visit it” which would surely deter the crowds. I, however, would pass with flying colors as I have known about this place for a decade and after a summer teaching Basque students when I was 24, I made a point of learning how to pronounce many words in Euskera. Now, I love all of Spain, don’t get me wrong, but northern Spain is seriously one of my favorite places on earth. This was my favorite part of my trip with my sister, showing her my favorite haunts in the north when I used to live up there, you know, in the pre-Instagram days. Some very exciting news on the @kakapo_recovery front here in New Zealand. For the first time in a decade two chicks have been born resulting from artificial insemination which is a BIG FREAKING DEAL because kākāpō only breed every few years and some of the more “valuable” genes in their small population can now be passed on. This breeding season for kākāpō has been full of highs and lows, with a record number of new chicks born only for them to get slammed with an outbreak of the rare fungal disease aspergillosis. These poor creatures. We are so lucky to have such a talented and strong team to care for them and who never, ever stop or give up. One of the chicks born from artificial insemination from Sinbad with rare genes from Fiordland, is currently battling aspergillosis, and I’m wishing him the best of luck! There’s a specific aspergillosis fund you can donate to (I’ll link in my Stories) and a big hearty and mighty thank you to @terunangaongaitahu and @meridianenergy for helping fund the breeding research #kiakaha #kakaporecovery #shaggedbyarareparrot #savethebirds

Since becoming a full-time travel blogger in 2013 my life has been filled with pinch-me moments and once in a lifetime opportunities. I never take them for granted and I wake up grateful for my life every day, even on those terrible days (which I often have). Not every day is heli-skiing fresh powder and Michelin starred dinners (though those are definitely perks!) Last year @southernlakesheliski took me snowboarding on our local iconic Black Peak in Wanaka with some of my best girlfriends + honorary girlfriend @markclinton (who took this shot and who I can vouch firsthand looks damn good in a dress ) and it was a day of challenges, triumphs, deep belly laughs and so much fun. Would you believe me if I told you that I earn enough money on my blog per month DOING NOTHING to live a normal life here in New Zealand? For a few years now my goal has been to set up enough “passive income” to be able to survive and free me up to take on some very scary-but-awesome lifelong projects that have been on the backburner. My passive income comes from both ad revenue and affiliate sales, and it really frees me up to live the life of my dreams and try new things. My personal mantra (and many others too) is to work smarter not harder. While I still take on a lot of other work at the moment as I slowly build myself up to some very exciting opportunities, I reckon in a year my passive income will be so set, that I’ll be off playing with penguins and writing about endangered birds with no thoughts about chasing work and closing deals @thetravelbootcamp #thetravelbootcamp #worksmarternotharder #bloglife

I could never understand why Barcelona gets so much attention, when Madrid is where it’s at, especially when it comes to fútbol #halamadrid! Yes, I just went there, throwing down the gauntlet. I’m Team Madrid all the way, having spent many summers living here and exploring the capital of Spain, and man, it’s such a young and fun city. Summer is the time for rooftop terrace bars and lounging around the Retiro in the late afternoon with friends, hopping from tapas bar to tapas bar in Malasaña and just enjoying the shimmering heat and liveliness. For me it’s always felt like a safe city for solo female travellers, and I loved sharing it with my sister on our vacation in Spain this June. I think I’ve yelled at her enough times to be vigilante with her iPhone and purse that the message has finally sunk in, and happy to report there were no pickpocketings and/or muggings from our time in the big smoke. I miss the noise and chaos already @southerncrosstravelinsurancenz #SCTI #sp #freeyouradventure

Memories from an AMAZING day chasing mister @willjackways around my home ski resort of Cardrona in New Zealand ️ a true Wanaka local, Will Jackways is one of the most incredible humans I’ve ever met. Humble, truly kind, and exceptionally generous, he’s an old soul with the spirit of Peter Pan who also happens to be one of New Zealand’s great snowboarding legends - and look - that’s me riding with him omg what a day (and what an honor) and I can happily report I kept my dignity and there were ZERO faceplants 🤗 Go me! A true inspiration to us all, after living a hectic life of being a pro around the world living from winter to winter (umm, Will, I know snow is amazing and all but summer in Wanaka is pretty epic) Will and his wife Abby (also a badass pro snowboarder) are raising a family in Wanaka and started @explorewanaka with custom and packaged snow tours here (and Japan too). If you dream of winter down under and are keen to spend time in our beautiful hills, I recommend you check Explore Wanaka out ASAP I can’t think of two better humans to share Wanaka with #explorewanaka #wanaka @markclinton

I was so excited to hear that the Hump Ridge Track has been named New Zealand's next Great Walk. This is one of my favorite tramps in New Zealand, and I have the best memories from a very hot summer down here with friends from @docgovtnz. The @humpridgetrack is a magical place built by the love and sweat of locals, and I can't think of a place that deserves it more. I feel so honored to see my shots featured over the years around the Hump Ridge Track and with this new announcement. I'm so proud of the great relationship I have built over the past 5 years with DOC here in NZ that let's me share these powerful stories and for their support with my crazy ideas @thetravelbootcamp #thetravelbootcamp #humpridgetrack #greatwalk

Honestly, is there anywhere more iconic in New Zealand than Milford Sound? I’ve been here dozens of times and I’ll always jump at the chance to return again! What. A. Place. Right now my whanau at @realjourneys are running a Choose Your Cruise special for July, where you can explore either Doubtful Sound or Milford Sound for just $190 🤗 which one should I pick? I have never been able to chose a favorite! Spill! Are you #teammilford or #teamdoubtful 🤔 #realjourneys

Guys, creativity is so damn hard. It’s a work in progress all the time, a journey without a final destination. Often I feel absolutely overwhelmed with thoughts of stories I want to share, projects I want to launch, ideas I want to cultivate and nurture, that I become somewhat lost and don’t know where to begin. The sweet joy and great burden when you sell your creativity on demand. After all, isn’t starting always the hardest part? Certainly that’s the feedback I get from so many people who are curious about creating a lifestyle like mine, a self-proclaimed creative with the freedom to travel the world making things on the internet (god, don’t you just hate me?). I have this big dream but where do I begin? I want to get paid to travel the world like you, but man, where do I start? what’s your tip for tapping into your creativity when you’re feeling stuck? Spill, I wanna know! @thetravelbootcamp #thetravelbootcamp #creativityondemand

Spain is a place that holds a big part of my heart, along with churros con chocolate. And my little sister, her too. All of the love. I know Spain well after living here for years, and I try to return regularly to get my fix of all the places and people that I love. As well as the food of course. But this trip was even more special because I brought along my 18 year old sister on her graduation trip before she begins college in the fall. I was only a year older than her when I moved to Spain for the first time, and I know exactly what an adventure like this can mean to a young person, how it can shape and change their lives and inspire them for the future (please tell me, Mal, did this trip shape and change your life in some profound way? Or are you just dreaming about those churros still and rolling your eyes at me when I ramble on about the Reyes Catolicos?) Who knows but I can say at least I helped try and share how I travel around the world safely and how to prepare for overseas adventures. And most importantly, how to get your overweight bags packed with too many things from the Spanish summer sales checked in for free. You’re welcome, baby sister @southerncrosstravelinsurancenz #SCTI #sp #freeyouradventure

7 years ago I was about to move home from Spain to live with my parents near Washington DC. I was still driving my car from high school, had about zero friends and was earning $15 an hour working in corporate America. I wore the same black slacks (fucking slacks) every single day and knew how to use a photocopier like a pro. The highlight of my day was getting a coffee on my commute to work at Starbucks and I cried almost daily on my lunch hour. I was 100 grand in student loan debt and this was not the life I wanted or had envisioned for myself at all But I had a blog and a big idea I wanted a life where I set my hours and rules, where I could be my full creative weird self and not be tied down to a specific location and be able to travel anywhere I wanted whenever I wanted. But above all, I wanted to inspire others to step out of their comfort zones and experience our big beautiful world, and all it’s flavors, creatures, cultures, and opportunities, to expand horizons and energize growth and change, to be able to speak the messages I care about to a curious, wide audience. I was NOT meant to spend my days in a cubicle wearing slacks. I figured out what I wanted, took a big leap of faith, and made it happen. Come join me at my next @thetravelbootcamp in Queenstown and learn how to orchestrate the life of your dreams too ️ #thetravelbootcamp #saynottoslacks

The more and more I learn about myself, the more I realize that happiness is a choice. Even though I’ve been fighting anxiety and depression for my whole life, and some days are just out of my control, the more I work to change my own narrative to be more positive, the better I feel. It’s so easy for me to downward spiral into a very unhealthy and negative headspace, but doing little things that bring me joy everyday along with telling myself a different story helps enormously. I even read out my own personal affirmations out loud every morning ️ what do you do to try and stay positive? #kiakaha #happiness #choosejoy #españa

Here’s to fresh starts and new beginnings, the closing of one chapter and looking forward to the next when it’s time to embrace change instead of fear it and the sweet joy of simple things that make you smile, of looking after yourself instead of always serving others, of putting yourself first and shifting how you perceive yourself, and learning just not to give a shit what other people think of you. It’s funny how you think you know yourself so well and have learned so many life lessons only to realize that there’s always more to learn! Working again in my beloved Canggu, Bali this week with @therichcoach and my partners @laurenepbath and @georgiarickard on our selves and our work, and it’s been terribly amazing so far #growthandstuff #millennial #ninedollarmassages #wheresmypokebowl

Still dreaming of my cozy birthday getaway to the @highcountrycabin in Twizel, New Zealand roaring fires, friendly sheep, woolly blankets, bottomless glasses of Pinot Noir, and nothing on the agenda. My heart actually began to sing when I got my first view of the stunning Marqués de Riscal winery for the first time since 2012 🥰 this was always one of my favorite places to visit when I lived in La Rioja, and it felt so amazing to share the experience of returning with my sister Designed by Frank Gehry, it’s such a cool place to visit, I love the mix of old and new here, tradition and avant-garde. As soon as we stepped back in the cellars the damp musty red wine smell took me straight back to my time here, and I was immediately flooded with memories of a different chapter of my life. It’s funny how certain scents can do that to you, hey? #larioja #marquesderiscal

Hanging out with the locals for my birthday near Twizel at the super cute and instagrammy @highcountrycabin exploring the beautiful Mackenzie Country in New Zealand never gets old. Not that we did much exploring on my birthday weekend, instead mostly napping, reading and drinking wine by the fire while these cuties peeked in the window and a lamb roast cooked away in the oven 🤔 now that I think about it, was that in poor taste? #highcountrycabin #twizel #baaaaah

“Never has it felt more important for me to tell stories of joy and abandon, passion and recklessness. Life is short and difficult, people. We must take our pleasures where we can find them. Right now the @realjourneys Winterfest is taking over Queenstown, turning my home area at the bottom of the world in New Zealand into a raging fun festival of all things winter, minus Jon Snow and the Starks unfortunately. It’s an absolutely epic time of year to visit this part of the world, and Queenstown truly comes alive over these couple of days with all of the fun. Also, go watch my Stories, like right now for more deets ️ one of the coolest things that’s happening is the chance to win $5,000 worth of Real Journeys adventures around New Zealand for you and a friend, like spending the night in Doubtful Sound and getting out to my beloved Stewart Island. I’ve used and worked with @realjourneys for over 6 years now, and the reason I keep coming back to them is because of their commitment to protecting the environment here in New Zealand and being involved with such cool events like @qtwinterfest. It’s amazing how they give back to New Zealand ️ #realjourneys #iloveqt #qtwinterfest #wearewinter #winterstartshere

My Spain nostalgia continues ️ one of my favorite parts of Spain was the almighty holiness that is the art of “dar un paseo.” Utterly respected and revered, no matter what you will always find Spaniards out and about, an active and social culture down to their very bones. And it’s never so evident than with the older generations, who go for walks even when they’re elderly, short and slow, arms interlinked, dressed beautifully, and never in a hurry. After all, why would you ever need to be in a hurry? I unashamedly follow them, in love with their berets and sweater vests, they way the older men often walk with their hands clasped behind their backs in divine contemplation, with deep throaty voices that sound like they’ve smoked since they were 12, and speaking a Spanish that is entirely incomprehensible to me. This sacred ritual of dar-ing un paseo in Spain will always fascinate and inspire me, and is the perfect simple reminder of the importance of just relaxing and enjoying the life around you, an art in which Spain has mastered #darunpaseo #bermeo #sonrieestasenespaña #abuelitos
